What is the Axion Pro Jacket?
The Axion is a super warm, tough, reliable and packable down jacket featuring a recycled inner/outer fabric and recycled down insulation. Use it for general walking, trekking, as a jacket to stick on after a climb, as a belay jacket, as something to wear to work and back... you get the picture!
What is it made of?
Insulation: Providing huge amounts of warmth inside the Axion is a fully recycled 700 fill power down with a Nikwax hydrophobic treatment. Only the highest quality down is collected, washed, sterilised and reused for Rab's jackets, providing exactly the same performance as new down but with far better environmental credentials. One of the main negatives to using down is that if it gets wet, it stops insulating you. Rab have combatted this by coating each and every cluster in aNikwax Hydrophobic treatment, meaning it dries faster, absorbs less water and lofts better than an untreated alternative.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down is treated to dry out and lofts quicker than untreated down, which gets all soggy and stops insulating once wet. It also resists moisture from sweat that may build up as you warm up inside the jacket.
Fabrics: Surrounding all this luxurious down is a recycled 20D Pertex Quantum Pro fabric. This fabric weighs very little and features a durable water repellent coating, providing a little weather-resistance if you happen to get caught out. Inside, a similar recycled 20D nylon is used but in a lighter, softer variant.
What are the features?
Starting at the top, you've got a helmet-compatible hood which is filled with Rab's Stratus synthetic insulation — this means it'll still provide warmth if it gets wet. If you're not a fan of hoods, it can be removed entirely. Moving down, you've got a chest pocket and strategically placed hand pockets which sit out the way of a climbing harness or rucksack hipbelt.
Stitch through midi-baffle construction allows the down to achieve maximum loft by providing larger space to fluff up than narrower baffles, essentially making it much warmer. Stitch through construction also helps prevent down migration as it restricts it from moving around too much when in use.
The front zip is two-way, allowing you to ventilate from the bottom or access a climbing harness without removing the jacket. An adjustable hem and cuffs allow you to seal in warmth.
