What is the Scimitar Jacket?
This jacket is a reliable softshell that provides a high level of weather resistance, freedom of movement and breathability. It's incredibly versatile and could suit a range of activities, including hiking, scrambling and mountaineering.
What is it made of?
Two different weights of Matrix™ Stretch double weave have been used to build this jacket - a heavier weight is used in high wear areas to increase the overall durability to take on rougher, more challenging terrain.
Rab specially selects Matrix™ fabrics for their unique properties, including having a high level (30+) of UV/UPF protection. This fabric has a slight stretch, improving comfort and mobility to help you through long days in the mountains and steep ascents. It has a soft brushed back that feels nice and smooth, and a matte finish that just looks fantastic.
The fabrics are treated with a fluorocarbon free DWR (Durable Water Repellent), which helps rainwater bead off the jacket. However, unfortunately, DWR doesn't give fully waterproof protection. It works most effectively in light rain showers, so you might want to pack a shell jacket for extra precaution in challenging conditions.
What are its features?
This jacket performs fantastically in changeable conditions. Due to its light stretch, the Scimitar is versatile enough for various activities in cold weather, where you might need some extra freedom of movement to tackle steep, technical ascents.
Mini twin needle stitching is used on every seam, adding durability to the construction at vital points.
The two way adjustable hood gives you options to optimise the fit if you want to feel more snug and cosy inside your jacket. Simply adjust using the single handed adjustment and concealed internal cord locks. These adjusters are really quick and easy to use and, as you may have guessed, can be used with just one hand! So there's no need to drop your kit or let go of your ropes if you need to adapt the fit.
The hood also has a wired, stiffened peak at the top, which feels really secure, looks very subtle and yet makes a big difference in keeping the rain from your face. The peak is lightweight and low bulk, so you barely even notice it's there when you're wearing it.
The centre fastening uses a YKK® VISLON® zip with a lower snap fastener for extra security and a full length zip guard for added wind resistance.
For storage, the Scimitar uses a three pocket configuration, including one Napoleon chest pocket and two hand pockets. These pockets are sized really well. They are perfect for keeping valuables close, such as a mobile phone or GPS, or just for a load of snacks if you require a substantial refuel when you reach the summit.
The sleeves are a good length and feel comfortable, providing sufficient coverage to keep you feeling sweet when it's blowing a hooley. The cuffs have a hook and loop adjustment system all the way around to adapt the fit around bare wrists, gloves or mitts.
A dual-sided rear adjuster is at the hem, which again can be used with just one hand! Fantastic if you're in the middle of a technical climb or sketchy scramble and want a bit of extra shield from the weather.
How does it fit?
The Scimitar comes in a regular fit which leaves room underneath the jacket for a couple of extra layers if needed, without being too bulky and oversized.
