What is the Shadow Canyon Jacket?

It's an incredibly versatile, stretchy and comfortable hardshell jacket that offers an excellent range of movement and maximum all-weather protection, thanks to a highly breathable 3-layer High & Dry waterproof membrane and an Empel permanent DWR.

It's ideal for various outdoor activities on unpredictable, rainy days and fast-paced winter mountain sports. It also works well in more urban settings commuting to work, running daily errands and even walking the dog in wet weather.

What is it made from?

Outer: The Shadow Canyon's outer fabric is a 40D ripstop fabric, with a durable two-way stretch that's robust enough to withstand the rigour of frequent skiing and snowboarding. This durable face fabric is treated with Artilect's superb Empel permanent DWR (durable water repellent) treatment for added water resistance, encouraging rain and snow to bead off the jacket instead of soaking in.

Empel DWRs use uniform polymers that individually wrap each of the fabric's fibres with a protective molecular bonded water-repellent shield. This creates a super-hydrophobic exterior to the material that provides 10 times more protection than regular DWRs and won't wear out or ever need to be reapplied as the water resistance is hyper-fused to the actual fibres of the fabric.

This impressive Empel DWR is hurricane chamber tested for reassurance that it can withstand the rigour of real-world use. This treatment also enhances the breathability and softness of the material, all while being water, solvent and PFA/PFC free! Oh, and to top it all off, it's also Oeko-Tex certified, making it a proven more environmentally friendly option.

Membrane: For waterproof protection, The Shadow Canyon Jacket uses Artilect's proprietary High & Dry 3-layer membrane and fully taped seams for reliable, high-performance in varied conditions. This membrane uses the EMPEL permanent super-hydrophobic exterior as a first line of defence. Combined, it has an excellent hydrostatic head rating of 30,000mm and a superior 30,000gm/m2/24-hour breathability rating to ensure you are fully protected both from external precipitation, wind and cold and internal moisture buildup. All this is achieved whilst being free from any harmful forever chemicals and is Bluesign approved for added eco-reassurance.

Lining: The jacket's lining is a 20D Jersey backer, which is breathable and moisture-wicking for lasting next-to-skin comfort when worn for long periods. It helps moisture vapour move through the jacket to stop it from feeling clammy or moist as you start to work up a sweat on steep climbs.

What are its features?

The Shadow Canyon jacket has a streamlined feature set that can handle most mountain adventures whilst retaining a clean aesthetic for more casual and urban use.

A fully adjustable hood provides excellent coverage and protection from the elements. The hood is compatible with a climbing helmet for added mountain versatility.

Two YKK Aquaguard underarm zips provide great ventilation to the jacket. Should you start to work up a sweat, simply undo all, or part of the zip to effectively dump excess heat so you can focus on moving fast without overheating or having to unzip the jacket in wet weather.

For storage, there are two zippered hand pockets with YKK® zippers, ideal for storing trail snacks, a small guidebook, gloves and a buff. Whilst a single zipped chest pocket provides space for storing more valuable items such as a mobile phone and GPS device.

The adjustable cuffs use bonded Hypalon texturised rubber tabs for ease of use with ski gloves or mitts in cold conditions. This material is also highly weather resistant and durable enough to withstand the rigour of regular mountain use.

The centre front zip features an innovative YKK® Touchlink™ zipper that links with your smartphone and the Lifekey™ software platform, enhancing the product's functionality. This YKK Touchlink™ is a new technology that allows users to track, manage and view their activities from their smartphone while providing access to additional Lifekey™ safety features. Powered by NFC technology (the same technology that powers Apple and Android pay), Touchlink™ serves as an access point to the internet when touched by a smartphone. The passive NFC technology is encased in a durable moulded TPU zipper pull designed to handle the abuses of everyday living. Built to endure a lifetime of laundering, severe weather, and rugged use, the technology is always on, has no moving parts and requires no power source. Neat, right?

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
