What is the Duality Jacket?

It's a warm and cosy waterproof jacket that utilises the latest Gore-Tex ePE technology and PrimaLoft® Silver insulation to deliver an impressive performance. Offering the best of both worlds, it's a versatile winter jacket ideal for various outdoor and everyday activities such as hill walking, hiking, doing the school run or watching the kids play football on the weekend.

What is it made from?

The Duality Jacket combines the latest Gore-Tex ePE technology and PrimaLoft® Silver insulation to create the ultimate warm and protective winter jacket.

Outer: Montane has used a highly durable 70 denier Gore-Tex ePE fabric with Gore performance technology for reliable protection from the elements. Despite its tough 70 denier construction, this plain weave fabric feels surprisingly smooth and low bulk, yet reassuringly sturdy. It's made from 100% recycled nylon and utilises the latest Gore-Tex ePE technology to provide a hydrostatic head rating of 28,000 mm and a RET breathability statistic of <13, making it an ideal choice for a wide range of outdoor and everyday activities.

If you were wondering, the latest Gore-tex technology uses an ePE membrane, which stands for expanded polyethene, which is light, thin yet durable, and PFC-free. If you're familiar with Trekitt descriptions, you may have seen that 'PFC-free' phrase floating around before. PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals' that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. Many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, so this is quite a breakthrough for the Gore-Tex® brand! In addition, this membrane has a reduced carbon footprint, as it uses laminates with a lower-mass membrane and select textiles, making it an ideal choice for more environmentally conscious adventurers.

Insulation: Montane has used PrimaLoft® Silver synthetic insulation in a body-mapped construction for efficient thermal performance, keeping you cosy and warm without hindering your movement or feeling like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. This is achieved by using 100g fill for the main torso and 80g fill through the arms.

Primaloft® Silver is a synthetic insulation made from 100% recycled polyester that provides a high-performance alternative to natural down. Though a little heavier than down, this insulation mimics the warmth and feel of natural down to give almost all the same benefits. On the plus side, it also retains its loft and warmth when wet (unlike down, which, unless treated, can lose all loft and, therefore, lose all heat). It also breathes well, has no allergens, compresses easily and dries exceptionally quickly.

Lining: The inner fabric is a 20 denier PEAQ lining made from 100% recycled Nylon. This lining is highly breathable and feels supremely comfortable and smooth next to the skin. It also happens to be incredibly abrasion-resistant, allowing it to withstand a lifetime of abrasion from various layers without looking tired in a few years' time.

Both the outer and lining of the Duality are finished with a PFC-Free DWR (durable water repellent) coating to encourage rain, snow and mud to bead off the jacket instead of soaking in, helping to keep the jacket's waterproof membrane clean, protected and in tip-top shape.

All fabrics used in the Duality Jacket are Bluesign® approved, meaning they're manufactured in a way that is safe for the environment, workers and consumers. Bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.

What are its features?

Starting at the top, a fully adjustable hood and collar deliver comprehensive weather protection, whilst the stiffened peak helps keep rain, wind, and snow out of your eyes. The hood and the collar are separate, allowing the collar to protect you independently against cold winds and drafts when the hood is not required, reducing any unnecessary bulk around the face.

The Duality is fastened with a two-way YKK centre front zip to help further keep rain and wind from reaching you inside the jacket. The two-way zip provides flexible ventilation options, easy access for use with a climbing harness and additional freedom of movement through the hips. If required, simply partially unzip it from the bottom for a greater range of movement to tackle steep ascents.

For storage, you'll find two YKK aqua guard zipped hand pockets ideal for storing essentials such as gloves, a beanie and trail snacks. The hand pockets are covered for further protection from the elements, helping to keep your belongings dry during heavy downpours. A YKK zipped internal chest pocket offers a safe haven for more valuable items such as a mobile phone, GPS device or car keys.

The sleeves are articulated to offer a natural range of movement and reach for mountain activities and dynamic movements. Grown-on adjustable cuffs allow you to achieve the perfect fit, even around chunky gloves. The Duality features a slightly longer cut in the body to provide added coverage from the elements. Finally, a fully adjustable bottom hem helps further seal out adverse weather and allows you to tailor the fit depending on the thickness of your layers.

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
