What is the Spine Jacket?
The Spine Jacket is the ultimate lightweight, breathable, tough shell jacket aimed at fast and light adventures. Gore-Tex Active ensures exceptional protection whilst offering unparalleled breathability. Weighing only 210g (Size 10), it can be stashed away into your pack until you need it, but is also comfortable enough to wear all day long.
What is it made from?
The Spine Jacket uses a 13D Gore-tex Active to protect you from the elements. At only 13D, the Spine is exceptionally packable and lightweight, making it best suited to running and ultra-light trips. It’s tough enough to be used with a lightweight running vest or a day pack, but it’s not intended to be used for gnarly mountaineering and heavy backpacking treks. Gore-Text Active is more breathable than standard Gore-tex, helping sweat and moisture vapor escape when you’re working hard. The light C-Knit backer is the layer that sits closest to your skin. It is exceptionally comfortable next to your skin, so the jacket is still comfortable even if you’re only wearing a short sleeve top underneath it. The entire jacket is then given a DWR coating to help water bead off the jacket.
What are the features?
Starting from the top, you get a low profile hood with an elasticated tab at the back to pull the sides of the hood in closer when the wind picks up. The stiffened peak helps prevent water from dripping into your eyes. The full-length YKK AquaGuard front zip features an internal storm guard to help keep the weather out. The two hand pockets will fit a phone or snacks but are also have a vented mesh back so you can unzip them to dump excess heat. Part elasticated cuffs and an adjustable hem help seal out the foul weather.
How does it fit?
Montane has used their "Mountain Run" fit for the Spine, resulting in a close-fitting jacket that packs down exceptionally small. It fits best over a base layer but you can also easily fit a lightweight fleece underneath it on those extra chilly days.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
It's designed as an outer layer which is where it will be used 90% of the time. You can stick a synthetically insulated jacket over the top when you stop for lunch to offer additional warmth, but the Spine works best as the layer on the outside of your layering system.
