What is the Mutant 52?
The Mutant 52 is a specially designed climbing pack that offers all the features and functions for multi-day ice and rock climbs, light alpine adventures and generally any discipline in any season! It's been tried and tested by real athletes and mountain guides, so with their seal of approval, you know it's the real deal.
What is it made of?
The main fabric used to construct the Mutant is 210D recycled high tenacity nylon, which is incredibly durable and can take a beating from rocks and rugged terrain easily. It has recycled nylon grid nanofly accents, and the base is reinforced with tough 450D recycled polyester to resist bumps and scrapes from heavy use without adding too much weight and bulk.
All materials are bluesign® approved and treated with a PFAS-free DWR (durable water repellent), which encourages light rain and snow to bead off the fabric.
PFAS-free means without per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl substances, which are chemicals often referred to as 'forever chemicals' that last for a long time in the environment and cause harm to human and animal life.
Which backsystem does it use?
As far as Osprey backsystems go, the Mutant is a little less on the techy side to ensure minimal weight.
It has an Atilon framesheet with dual aluminium stays and snowshed fabric, which provides structure and support when the pack is loaded. The backpanel is padded with ridged EVA foam for comfort and stops contents inside from jabbing you in the back as you move.
The carrying harness uses more EVA foam, so it feels solid and secure yet still comfy when fastened up, surrounded with stretch woven mesh that helps to increase ventilation.
What are its features?
It has a top lid closure which is removable if you're looking to get the weight down to a minimum. The lid has a zip pocket, perfect for storing valuables like keys, a wallet or a mobile phone, alongside a FlapJacket and stowaway pocket for smaller belongings.
Dual side wand pockets double up as snow-picket pockets for multi-day activities where you're likely pitching tents in the white stuff.
The Mutant 52 accommodates a climbing helmet with ease - it has a removable, multi-position helmet carry net that keeps it in place during walk-ins. For ski-touring and snowy expeditions, skis can be attached to this pack using the A-frame carry, which is reinforced for durability to take the weight and ensure reliability for regular use and multi-day adventures.
Quick release upper and lower compression straps allow you to get rid of any dead space when the pack is loaded and speedily undo everything to get into your backpack with minimal faff. Internal straps offer further compression and can also be used for rope attachment.
The buckle fastenings are lightweight and easy to use with gloves or numb fingers, perfect for the winter season or activities at a higher altitude.
Removable webbing gear attachment straps and front panel daisy chain loops are additional options for external storage. These loops are also compatible with Voile straps. Dual tool locks with bungee tie-offs provide security for ice axes to be properly and safely carried.
Finally, if you're a fan of hydration reservoirs, you're in luck! All Mutant packs are hydration compatible with an internal sleeve for water bladders.
