What is the Freescape Pro 40+?
The Freescape Pro is a tough, comfortable pack for ski mountaineers who are attempting multi-day routes in high-altitude conditions. A long feature list means you'll be able to pack everything you need and have it close to hand during your climb.
What is it made of?
The main fabric used is a 100% recycled 235D polyester while the base has been reinforced with a 420D/630D polyester mixture. The main fabric used consumes 27% less natural resources and outputs 28% fewer greenhouse gases. Both fabrics are ultra-tough, abrasion-resistant, highly water-resistant and equipped to deal with constant abuse while in the mountains.
Which backsystem does it use?
The Freescape Pro uses Deuter's Alpine backsystem. This is a snug-fitting system that keeps the weight as close to your body as possible for greater stability in technical environments. The backbone of this system is Deuter's Delrin U-frame, a lightweight yet stiff internal frame that gives the pack structure; this not only makes it more comfortable to carry but ensures items inside the pack don't deform the overall shape and throw you off balance.
Thick, comfortable sections of non-absorbent foam sit underneath the shoulder straps and above the hipbelt to offer increased comfort. These raised pieces of foam create a channel through the centre of the backsystem that air can pass through, keeping you cool and comfortable.
Finally, you've got a low-profile hipbelt and shoulder straps that distribute the load of the pack evenly. The hipbelt can be easily pinned out of the way if you're not a fan of them while climbing.
What are its features?
Possibly the most useful feature of the pack is its multiple points of entry. You can either go in through the top in the usual fashion or via a large U-shaped zip in the backsystem itself. This allows you to grab items at the bottom of the pack without unpacking the whole thing, plus it also keeps the backsystem out of the snow.
Storage-wise, you've got a zipped pocket on the hipbelt, a compartment dedicated to avalanche equipment with a reinforced shovel sleeve and organiser pockets, a phone pocket on the side of the pack, a sleeve for your hydration bladder, a front compartment to store maps, a zipped lid pocket with a fleece-lined goggle pocket and a zipped mesh pocket in the main compartment. A lot of pockets!
Other features include one gear loop and one ice clipper slot on the hipbelt, an adjustable sternum strap with a whistle, a sunglasses holder on the shoulder strap, an internal SOS label to fill out some vital details, two axe attachment points, two straps to attach skis, a snowboard or crampons, a detachable helmet holder, a rope strap and finally side compression straps to pull the weight of the bag closer to your back.
