Consumer Contract Regulations (CCR)

What are the Consumer Contract Regulations?

Under the "Consumer Contract Regulations, you have the right to cancel an order for goods made at a distance. These rights start from the moment you place your order and ends 14 days from the day you receive your goods.

Your right to cancel

Your right to cancel an order for goods starts the moment you place your order and ends 14 days from the day you receive your goods.

This 14 day period is the time you have to decide whether to cancel, you then have a further 14 days to actually send the goods back.

Your Right to a Refund under CCR

You may get a refund within 14 days of either, the trader getting the goods back, or you providing evidence of having returned the goods (for example, a proof of postage receipt from the post office), whichever is the sooner.

A deduction can be made if the value of the goods has been reduced as a result of you handling the goods more than was necessary. The extent to which you can handle the goods is the same as it would be if you were assessing them in a shop.

Refunding the cost of delivery

The trader has to refund the basic delivery cost of getting the goods to you in the first place, so if you opted for enhanced service e.g. guaranteed next day, it only has to refund the basic cost.

Exemptions

There are some circumstances where the Consumer Contracts Regulations does not give you a right to cancel. These include CDs, DVDs or software if you've broken the seal on the wrapping, perishable items and tailor-made or personalised items. They also include goods with a seal for health protection and hygiene reasons that have been broken or tampered with, e.g. Climbing Equipment and PPE.

My goods are broken

If you feel that your item is defective/broken/faulty and it is still under warranty, please contact our Customer Support team([email protected])with as much information as possible with regards to the fault, including photos if applicable.

We want to reduce our impact on the environment as much as possible, the first step for this is reducing our waste. Therefore, please note that we will always offer a professional repair in the first instance; if the product can be repaired.

This may involve your product being sent back to our suppliers or to a professional repair company. Please note that due tovaried procedures, warranty claims and repairs can take between 2 and 4 weeks to be concluded

Rab Mens Electron Jacket Graphene

Season:Sale

Brand:Rab

Code:RBEGZ

What is the Electron Jacket?

The Rab Electron jacket is a mid-weight, technical down jacket with a highly water-resistant fabric making it perfect as an outer jacket for cold, wet and generally miserable winter conditions.  Because of its excellent pack size, it also works superbly as an over-layering jacket to keep in your pack. Simply whip it out when you need to chuck it over the top of all your layers to provide warmth on those exposed belays, or when stopping for lunch on winter outings. As well as all that technical stuff The Electron is also pretty much the perfect winter coat for everyday use.

What is the Electron jacket made from?

Outer fabric: The outer fabric used is the ever reliable Pertex Quantum Pro fabric to give this brilliant jacket superb weather resistance and durability. This lightweight rip-stop fabric is made from a tightly woven nylon and has an ultra-thin Polyurethane water-resistant coating on the back to provide increased weather resistance. This doesn’t make the jacket completely waterproof, but it does make it able to shrug off snow and light rain longer than an untreated down jacket. Although we’d always advise that you carry a 100% waterproof shell with you if you are using the Electron in the mountains.

Insulation: The important stuff that’s going to keep you warm is 190g of 800FP Hydrophobic ethically sourced European Goose down. All Rab’s down is Responsible Down Certified (RDS) and comes from European geese and ducks. The RDS ensures that the down in a product does not come from birds that have been live-plucked or force-fed and that their welfare has been protected from the time they were hatchlings to when they are slaughtered.

What’s fill power? Well, for those who don’t know, it’s an internationally recognised measurement of how well down will “loft”. Loft describes how “fluffy” the insulation is, the “fluffier” down is the more space it can occupy and the more warm air it can trap in all those fine filaments. Down simply doesn’t work when compressed. The number used in Fill Power describes the amount of space one ounce of down will occupy in cubic inches when allowed to reach its maximum loft. So, in the case of the Rab Electron jacket, one ounce of down will loft up to fill 800 cubic inches, or to put that in perspective, it’s equivalent to about 13 litres, or the same as a Large Exped Fold Dry-Bag.

To further improve the Electron’s weather resistance every individual cluster of down has been treated with special Nikwax Hydrophobic stuff to ensure they resist moisture, retain more heat, loft better, and dry much quicker than untreated down. Again…this does not in any way make this a waterproof jacket. To keep that Hydrophobic treatment working for the life of the jacket use Nikwax Down Wash Direct to wash the jacket and then re-proof with Nikwax Down Proof. Alternatively, if you can’t be bothered to do this yourself Rab offer a cleaning service direct from their website.

To cleverly optimise the performance of all that lovely down, Rab have cleverly used a mix of midi and mini stitch-through baffles. Midi baffles are used on the torso, back and hood whilst mini baffles are used on the sides and arms.

What are the main features?

Starting up at the top, the hood on the Electron is a key feature for us at Trekitt, Rab hoods are always excellent. This particular one features a proper wired peak and is truly helmet compatible so you can get the hood over a climbing helmet if you fancy some vertical adventures. Adjustability is taken care of by a Velcro tab at the back and drawcords at both sides. This means that it still fits well over a beanie or a bare head. Rab have also included another Velcro tab inside that allows you to roll the hood down and secure it if it’s not required.

The main zip is a reliable YKK VISLON moulded version to reduce ice build-up and it is backed up by an internal baffle to keep out the drafts. Storage wise, you get two YKK VISLON moulded zipped hand pockets, the stuff sack can be found in one of these, and a zipped internal security pocket to keep valuables safe and warm. The sleeves are finished off with some extremely soft and comfortable stretch woven cuffs that make the Electron an absolute pleasure to wear. They fit snug to your wrist but will stretch to tightly seal over gloves. At the hem you get a dual sided, one-pull hem drawcord for quick adjustment, even with gloves on.
How does the Electron jacket Fit?

The Electron features a relatively slim, long cut with long arms. For reference, Paul (staring in the video below) is 6ft 3", has a 42" chest, a 34" waist and is wearing a size large.

Where does the Electron jacket fit in the layering system?

The Electron Jacket works best as an extremely weather resistant outer jacket when you’re out in the mountains in typical UK damp and freezing conditions. However, because it packs up so well, it can be carried in your pack for use as an insulating over-layer on belays or food stops. Layering is not a precise science and there is no one perfect system that will suit every person, situation or the weather conditions. Some of us feel the cold, others, like me, get hot very quickly, but for more advice on using layers please check our YouTube video

How to wash your down products

Having spent years talking to people about down products, whether that’s a jacket, sleeping bag or even a pair of slippers, very few have had the confidence to go ahead and wash the product on their own, especially when they have just spent an arm and a leg on it. This small guide is here to explain that it’s not as daunting and utterly terrifying as it first appears.

Step one: Before you even get near that washing machine, wipe off any excess mud or dirt that may be lingering on the surface of the jacket, as this will clog up the washing machine, eventually rendering it useless.

We recommend the use of Nikwax Down Wash Direct for down products as it’s one hundred percent environmentally friendly and will wash and re-proof the garment without the use of bleach or any other nasty chemicals. What household washing agents can (and often do) is remove the water repellent coating on the fabric of the jacket, whilst also damaging the delicate array of feathers inside.

Step two: We’ll assume in this instance that you’ve been washing other products prior to your down jacket and have used a bleach based detergent. Therefore it’s a good idea to run the washing machine for half an hour or so without anything inside to rinse it clean before adding the Nikwax or putting the jacket in. Also, don’t forget to remove the detergent drawer to give it a wash inside, outside and behind, as detergent can clog up and still enter the washing machine if not cleaned out thoroughly. This ensures that any remnants of detergent are removed and that the Nikwax products will work effectively.

Step three: Set the washing machine to a cold wash (check the garments care label, most tend to be around 30°C) and as delicate as possible. Most washing machines have a “wool” cycle which is ideal.

Step four: If using Nikwax Down Wash Direct, place 100ml in either the tray or directly into the washing machine inside a small pot/ball. If you choose to use another washing product, place the appropriate amount in the machine in the same way.

Step five: Set the washing machine to run on a slow cycle, allowing plenty of time for the jacket to soak up the cleaning/re-proofing product. Most washing machines will have a pre-set time for different washing cycles.

When the cycle has finished be prepared for a shock, your precious bit of kit will come out looking like a soggy ball of material. But don’t worry, you haven’t ruined it, it’s just that all that fluffy down insulation has become water logged and has clumped together. The trick is to now get all that down nice and dry to reinstate its superb insulating properties. Simply hanging it up in a warm place will not work that well. It will take days to properly dry and you will have to constantly break up the clumps to get it thoroughly dry. The best way is to use a tumble dryer; either a domestic one for smaller items or a commercial drier for sleeping bags.

Step six: Pop the garment into the dryer and make sure to select a low heat; a high heat runs the risk of melting seams and fabrics within the garment. It sounds weird, but shove a few tennis balls into the drier with the garment; the tennis balls will bounce around and help to break up the clumps of down. Every 20 minutes, pull the jacket out of the dryer and lie the jacket down on a table. Run your hands over the jacket until you find a 'clump' or ball of down; tease apart this down clump and spread it evenly into the baffle. Once you're confident you've pulled apart every clump to the best of your ability, stick it back in for another 20 minutes. Keep repeating this until there are no more clumps left.

Step seven: When the cycle has finished and you are sure that you have got the garment as dry as possible, hang it up in a warm dry place, an airing cupboard is ideal, for 24 hours. This drives out the last of any dampness and allows the down to loft fully. Take it out and give it a good shake and, hey presto, it’ll be as good as new.

Professional Opinion

Written: Harry Bradbury

Introduction: You’d be right in thinking that the Rab Electron looks just like a number of Rab’s other insulated pieces; the baffled design, classic Rab logo and a neat, recognisable fit, however (to me) the Electron is a little different in its own unique way. Having owned the Electron for just over two months, I can firmly say that many of my other jackets will be left lurking at the back of my wardrobe or resigned to DIY duties.

Fit: This is where the first noticeable difference lies between your standard insulated jacket and even some of Rab’s own insulated pieces. The Electron boasts a fit that is far superior to any insulated jacket I have ever had the pleasure to try on. Insulated jackets are constantly appearing on the shop floor from a massive range of brands and price points, so fit is something that everyone at Trekitt is familiar with and consequently hugely fussy about. As soon as you put the Electron on you realise how much thought has gone into every minute detail. The cuffs are luxuriously soft and stretchy, ideal for creating a seal around your wrists (or gloves) in complete Velcro-less comfort. The sleeves are articulated, exceptionally comfortable and more than long enough for me (I’m 6’ 2”, slightly built and wear a size small). The lower half of the jacket features a hem drawcord, however I haven’t had to use these yet as the lower baffles on the Electron do such a great job on their own. The slightly larger lower baffles feel snug yet unrestrictive, allowing you to move whilst trapping as much warm air inside as possible. Overall, you feel an all-encompassing sense of warmth and comfort, much like getting into a warm car after a cold and windy winter walk.

IMG_9221

Hood: Rab have always produced great hoods. Trekitt’s Managing Director (the judge and harshest critic of hoods that are miss-shaped, baggy and useless) has always proclaimed that Rab’s hoods are rather good. The Electron’s hood hugs the sides of your head like a beanie, yet doesn’t feel intrusive or ‘weird’ in any way. Although snug, it features enough room for a climbing helmet and can be adjusted to stop the wind whistling in, which is particularly useful on a cold day when not wearing a helmet. The hood also moves with your head extremely well, so you don’t disappear into your little sanctuary of down when someone tries to talk to you. I used the Electron in 1°C temperatures with just a mid-weight baselayer underneath and the hood made a BIG difference to my overall warmth when static.

IMG_9226

Fabrics: The selection of fabrics, like everything else on this jacket, are exceptionally well chosen. My first impression when slipping the Electron on was how easy it is to get into. The inner fabric is made from a tough, yet lightweight nylon which slides easily over baselayers and midlayers; whether they’re wool, polyester or nylon fabrics. I once owned a jacket whose inner fabric developed two wear holes on the lining fabric simply from abrasion against outdoor trousers; I’m confident that the Electron won’t be facing the same issue. The outer fabric is tough Pertex Quantum Pro, which also slides nicely under shell jackets when layering up. It’s also highly wind resistant, not once have I felt the wind blow through, and it’s been just about everywhere under 1000 metres. Water resistance is a little bit of a sore subject when it comes to down jackets, however Rab have you covered here too. The Pertex Quantum fabric provides high levels of water resistance without sacrificing breathability, weight or packability. Whilst it’s not completely 100% waterproof it will shrug off rain and snow, but if you want 100% protection from the elements check out the Valiance Jacket by Rab.

Insulation: The most important part of any insulated jacket. I’ve never felt the need to wear anything but a baselayer underneath this jacket, it’s incredibly, forgetfully, brilliantly warm. You forget it’s cold outside, you forget the strong wind and the numbness in your hands; the people complaining about the cold around you simply become a faint whine in the distance (sorry, not sorry). The 800-fill power European Goose down is pretty much as good as it gets and is ethically sourced from birds which haven’t been live plucked or mistreated. What’s also unique is that the down is evenly spread out in baffles of variable sizes to fully optimise warmth and packability, completely eliminating cold spots to keep you toasty and warm. This superior down is also treated to a hydrophobic treatment that means it will retain more warmth when wet, will dry faster and will loft better than untreated down. I haven’t tested this yet, and won’t be rushing to dunk it in a puddle, however if I do happen to get caught out I’ll appreciate the thought and effort that Rab have put in.

Pockets: This is a simple category but needs a mention. The two hand pockets are really, really warm. Rab have placed the insulation behind the pockets, meaning if you leave the zips undone you won’t notice any warmth difference, but somehow, they manage to your hands exceptionally warm. They’re also surprisingly deep, easily swallowing my hat, gloves, a dog lead and obviously hands. The entrance zips are placed fairly high to allow access whilst wearing a climbing harness or rucksack hip belt and they unzip from the top, so you can still access the contents. You also get one internal security pocket which is where my phone lives as it’s the safest and warmest pocket; the included stuff sack also fits nicely inside here.

Conclusion: If I were to recommend one winter down jacket for a wide range of winter activities from mountaineering to dog walking, the Electron would be my choice.  Since owning it, two of my other (more expensive) jackets have become redundant as the Electron completely outperforms them. I generally only need to wear a warm baselayer underneath (in the UK, at least) and have remained comfortable in cool/cold conditions. The fit is spot on, the hood is pretty much perfect, the warmth is ideal for UK winters and I love the simplistic design.
