What is the Luhkka?
Fjallraven's unique Luhkka is inspired by the Sami's Luhkka - a poncho-like, hooded cape that covers the top half of the body. Thanks to the G1000 fabric and thin synthetic lining, this version is water resistant and insulated, to provide maximum protection out on the hill, in the mountains or even for days out a little closer to home.
What is it made of?
The Luhkka uses Fjallravens signature G1000 fabric on the outer and polyamide for the lining. Supreme Microloft insulation is sandwiched between these two fabrics to create a light layer of warmth.
Outer: G1000 is one of Fjallraven's cornerstone materials. It uses a blend of 65% polyester and 35% cotton, which is lightweight, ventilating and hardwearing.
G1000 can be adapted to different personal preferences or climatic conditions using Greenland Wax. The wax allows you to customise the fabric's properties, such as wind and water resistance and breathability.
Greenland Wax is easy to apply - you can literally do it anywhere! If you'd like to learn more about how to apply it correctly, check out our short YouTube tutorial by clicking here.
Lining: The lining of this cape is polyamide. Polyamide provides excellent abrasion resistance to increase durability for regular use. It feels lightweight and smooth against the skin, offering less bulk without compromising strength and robustness.
Insulation: Supreme Microloft is Fjallraven's own synthetic insulation, developed to offer warmth, even in damp conditions.
Supreme Microloft mimics down clusters by trapping warm air to retain heat and keep you warm for longer. However, unlike down, it can stay warm once moist, making it much more effective and reliable in damp conditions. Overall, this insulation is also more durable than down and much easier to clean and maintain, though slightly less packable.
What are its features?
This cape is knee-length, slightly longer than traditional Sami Luhkkas, providing increased protection from the elements if you're out hill walking or trekking in colder, wetter seasons. The Luhkka can be worn on its own during fall and spring when it's milder and drier or over regular shell garments for maximum shielding and warmth during winter.
It has an adjustable hood with detachable synthetic fur, allowing you to reduce the garment's weight and bulk or quickly take it off when you get caught in a shower.
A half zipper at the front of the cape makes it easier to get in and out of when you're layered up. The opening has a G1000 gusset that reinforces protection near the zip with soft fleece inside that feels luxurious next to the skin. The zipper pulls are made of traditional, natural tone leather. They are decorated with a small Fjallraven Arctic Fox logo on the bottom, showing fantastic attention to detail that transforms this cape into not only a functional winter piece, but a fashionable one too!
For storage, there's a pocket on the breast, ideal for stowing away valuables you want to keep easily accessible, such as a GPS device, mobile phone or snacks. Further down, you'll find a larger kangaroo pouch for bulkier items like a map or even an extra shell layer.
Finally, detailed Fjallraven push buttons on the wrists help keep the cape in place when you're moving and help prevent it from flapping around too much in the wind.
