What is the Earthrise Jacket?
Mountain Equipment's Earthrise Jacket is an insulated down jacket with a much more sustainable footprint than other down jackets on the market. It uses 100% recycled down fill and 100% recycled fabrics without compromising quality and function. It's the ideal jacket for winter mountain adventures or even running errands a little closer to home.
What is it made of?
The outer fabric and lining are made of 100% recycled 20D polyamide, which is lightweight and durable. The outer is downproof, helping prevent down clusters and feathers from leaking through the fabric, while the lining is smooth and feels really comfy next to the skin. This material is coated with a PFC-free DWR (durable water repellent), which encourages water to bead off the fabric. However, it doesn't offer complete waterproof protection for when the heavens start to open.
All the down insulation used to fill this jacket is recycled, meaning it contains duck and goose down reclaimed from various sources such as pillows and bedding. Being recycled doesn't mean the down is lesser quality; this insulation has a minimum fill power of 700 and at least is made up of 85% down clusters, offering a high level of heat retention for cold weather and a fantastic warmth to weight ratio. Down insulation is also highly compressible, making it much easier to pack down and stuff away into a kit bag if you're travelling for multiple days.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
PFC-free DWR - PFC-free DWR's are much more environmentally friendly than regular treatments, as they don't contain the PFC's (per- and poly-fluorinated chemicals) that damage the environment once released through waste water from the manufacturing process.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 700 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 700 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. What are its features?
Generally, the jacket is light and low bulk due to its stitch-through narrow baffle construction. The baffles are individually filled with down, keeping the insulation in place to create an even spread of warmth and preventing down migration. Narrow baffles give a much more contemporary, versatile look, so you can easily wear this jacket casually around town as well as in the mountains without looking out of place.
There is a moulded YKK® zip on the front with an insulated baffle at its rear. This baffle prevents cold spots from developing at the entry for maximum heat retention to keep you feeling toasty all day long.
Plenty of storage options come with this jacket - there are four pockets in total, including two zipped hand warmer pockets, perfect for hill snacks, gloves or a mobile phone. There's also a napoleon chest pocket and an internal zipped security pocket for more valuable possessions such as car keys or your wallet.
The cuffs are bound with elastic, providing extra stretch for improved freedom of movement around the wrists. The elastic also allows you to fit chunky gloves or mitts whilst cinching in the fabric enough to keep in the warmth when wrists are bare underneath.
If you want to take the jacket off, it easily packs down into its own hand pocket and has two twin carabiner loops that allow you to attach carabiners and hook them onto belt loops or day pack.
