What is the Grendal Jacket?
It's a windproof and highly breathable synthetically insulated jacket designed for reliable warmth and active outdoor use. Despite its active intentions, this versatile jacket is also great for casual all-round use throughout the colder months, whether you're walking the dog, commuting to work or doing the school run.
What is it made from?
Insulation: The heart of the jacket is filled with ThermoSphere™ synthetic insulation, which has a 35% recycled content. The Grendal is filled with 80g insulation to the body and sleeves for maximum warmth and 60g to the hood to reduce unnecessary bulk.
ThermoSphere™ insulation has an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio that will keep you well-protected even when the insulation is wet. Unlike traditional down-filled jackets, synthetic insulation is easier to care for and retains up to 90% of its thermal performance when wet.
Outer: The Grendal Jacket's outer is made from a breathable 30D ripstop Gore-Tex Windstopper™ fabric made from 100% polyamide.
Gore-Tex Windstopper™ is designed to provide versatile comfort. Though a Gore-Tex product, this one isn't waterproof, but water repellent, so it will only keep you dry in light rain and showers. However, it does feature an integrated membrane that blocks wind, making it completely windproof, increasing heat retention. Gore-Tex Winstopper™ also has breathable, moisture-wicking properties, creating a permeable layer for sweat to escape through the membrane and wick away.
This durable and breathable face fabric is treated with a PFCec-Free DWR (durable water repellent) coating to encourage rain to bead off the fabric instead of soaking in, improving the jacket's water-resistant properties. This DWR is free from harmful forever Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCec) which were traditionally used to add water repellent to textiles. These chemicals aren't able to break down, so once they reach nature via water waste from factories, they stay out there and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a greener manufacturing process.
What are its features?
The Grendal uses dual-weight insulation for maximum warmth in vital areas such as the body and sleeves. Reduced filling to the hood reduces unnecessary bulk and improves the overall comfort levels of the jacket.
A fully adjustable insulated hood with a wired peak protects you from cold winds and light showers. The hood can be easily rolled away and secured when not in use, so it doesn't flap around in high winds.
The jacket features a simple YKK® centre front zip closure with an insulated inner placket to help reduce heat loss through the zip.
For storage, there are two hand pockets for keeping trail snacks, gloves and a beanie close to hand. A Napoleon chest pocket offers storage for energy gels, whilst an internal pocket offers a secure home for more valuable items you want to keep warm and protected, such as a mobile phone and GPS device. All of the Grendel's pockets feature a zipped closure to keep your belongings safe whilst out on the hill.
Adjustable semi-elasticated cuffs and an adjustable drawcord hem allow you to seal out the elements, aiding the jacket's heat retention.
Finally, the jacket is supplied with a stuff sack to pack away when not in use and store in your backpack for when the temperatures drop.
Stuffsacks are literally made for stuffing! Don't fold away the jacket to pack it up - make sure you stuff it in the bag randomly. By doing this, the insulation is packed down differently each time, preventing creases from developing in the down and stopping cold spots from forming in the insulation.
