What is the Orion Jacket?

Mountain Equipment's Orion Jacket is a durable waterproof jacket best suited to burly mountain adventures such as mountaineering and climbing in less-than-favourable weather. It's built with robust materials and provides complete weather protection without compromising comfort and breathability.

What is it made of?

The Orion is constructed using three-layer Drilite® XT 70D fabric, which features a nanoporous membrane and a PFAS-free DWR (durable water repellent) for additional protection and breathability maintenance. It comprises 100% recycled polyamide for a lesser environmental impact without compromise, ensuring it will endure a beating in harsh conditions.

A nanoporous membrane also provides the added benefit of enhanced breathability. Nanoporous membranes breathe passively, unlike microporous (regular) membranes, which need pressure to breathe. Passive breathability means the jacket will continue breathing and regulating temperature even when you're not moving and working up a sweat, perfect for high-output activities and times when you'll be wearing your shell for both static and active pursuits.

Three-layer Drilite® XT reinforcements are also strategically placed to help reduce wear and tear and increase the longevity of this jacket, again, with a PFAS-free DWR.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that cause detrimental harm to the environment. These chemicals aren't able to break down, so once they reach nature via factory water waste, they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

What are the features?

A Super Alpine HC Hood comfortably accommodates a climbing helmet. It is also fully adjustable, allowing you to achieve a precise fit every time and ensuring the hood doesn't blow down in the wind and impede your vision.

A seamless face panel provides optimum comfort when the jacket is fully zipped, allowing you to wear it all day long.

An Alpine Fit sits closer to the body without being restrictive, meaning you can easily fit layers underneath for cold, wet conditions. Articulated and pre-shaped sleeves also improve freedom of movement and mobility for climbing and mountaineering while reducing jacket rise as you stretch or reach upward.

A two-way, YKK® AquaGuard® centre front zip provides versatility to suit different activities and weather conditions. You can unzip the jacket from the bottom up to accommodate a climbing harness or ventilate it without removing it completely. Handy, right?

Two large laser-cut and laminated chest pockets with YKK® water-resistant zips provide secure, weather-protective storage for small belongings such as energy gels, snacks, a GPS, or gloves. You also get a laminated and laser-cut inner pocket, which works perfectly for valuables like keys or a mobile phone.

Two-way underarm pit zips with YKK® water-resistant zips enhance airflow under the arms when unfastened, so those pits don't have to get damper than they need to be.

Lastly, adjustable laminated cuffs and dual tether hem drawcords help seal the weather out while accommodating various layers and accessories.
