What is the Olympus 450?
Mountain Equipment have created the perfect first down sleeping bag with the Olympus 450. It has a simple, minimal design that certainly doesn't lack technical features - giving you everything you need for a cosy night's kip in camp.
What is it made of?
The Helium™ outer shell offers a light, breathable layer to protect the Pure Duck Down insulation, with a PFC free DWR for light water resistance. A Supersoft™ lining offers next to skin comfort, again with a PFC free, durable water repellent to help protect the down from drink spills in the tent or light rain showers.
Insulation: 80-20 Pure Duck Down fills the sleeping bag, with a minimum fill power of 600. Pure Duck Down is a high quality feather down that feels lightweight and fluffy, offering a substantial amount of warmth in cold temperatures. The down in this product also comes from a Down Codex® Audited Source, making it a much more ethical and sustainable option than lesser quality down on the market.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 600 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 600 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
Down Codex® Audited Source - Having a Down Codex® Audited Source stamp indicates that there was no unnecessary harm caused when sourcing 100% of the down and that it came from an ethical, traceable source.
Outer: Helium™ 30D with PFC free DWR - Helium™ fabrics are lightweight, ultra-compressible, high performance materials, perfect for products with weight and bulk at the top of their concerns. Their densely woven structure, using fine denier yarns, offers a layer of downproof yet breathable protection to create an incredibly versatile, functional fabric.
Lining: Supersoft™ 30D with PFC free DWR - Mountain Equipment has chosen Supersoft™ lining, a high quality material that is soft to touch, yet weighing in at just 49g/m², it gives exceptional durability and breathability.
PFC free DWR: Durable water repellent (DWR) offers a layer of water resistance to help protect the material from light contact with liquids, such as light rain, snow showers, or drinks spills in the tent. Being PFC free means that the treatment doesn't contain any harmful chemicals to the environment, making it a much more sustainable finish than standard DWR.
What are its features?
The Olympus sleeping bag is constructed using slanted box-wall baffles, which help maximise the loft and promotes the equal spread of down for added warmth, supported with mid-level side seams.
The bag uses an Alpine fit - specifically, the Alpine Fit 2.0, redeveloped from the original Alpine Fit to be marginally wider in vital areas. This fit still comes up slim, it is a tapered shape that helps maximise thermal efficiency without feeling restrictive. The Alpine Fit 2.0 allows better versatility in the overall fit and sizing of the bag, reaching a more comprehensive range of users without sacrificing performance and functionality. This shape also allows users to sleep in varied positions for ultimate comfort and an overall great night's sleep.
A five baffle set up in the hood keeps your head toasty all night long, even after reoccurring use. Anatomically shaped for the best coverage, the hood is low volume to reduce bulk and provide more breathing space.
Down at the toes, there's a two baffle anatomically shaped, offset foot box. The shaping of the foot box gives wriggly sleepers a little extra space, helping alleviate feelings of restriction within the sleeping bag and encouraging a much more natural sleeping position.
A simplified Gemini™ zip baffle entry makes for easy access. The baffle runs alongside the main zip to prevent cold spots from developing at the entrance throughout the night. There is also an integrated neck collar for extra coverage around the top half, helping to prevent warm air from escaping as you move around.
There is a zipped internal pocket, super handy for storing smaller items like snacks or an alarm clock, as well as stopping your phone from getting buried in the deep depths of your bag overnight!
Also included is a waterproof roll-top stuffsack for on-the-go carry, alongside a storage cube for home storage. The best way to store a sleeping bag is to literally stuff it into your stuffsack. Randomly stuffing the sleeping bag helps prevent cold spots from creases that form when sleeping bags are folded up. At home, cram it into the storage cube all the same. The storage cube is less compact than the stuffsack to enable the down to stay lofted when stored for a longer period - this enhances the warmth and contributes to maximum performance when it comes to using it again.
