What is the Xeros?
The Xeros sleeping bag is part of Mountain Equipment's Extreme Alpine Series - a series of sleeping bags designed to withstand harsh, cold conditions, long expeditions and technical ascents. This series has been built and developed around sixty years of outdoor industry experience, ensuring a high standard of construction and fabrics for optimum performance.
What is it made of?
This sleeping bag is constructed using a combination of technical materials, including Drilite® Loft 10D, Ultrasoft™ 10D and a Russian Goose Down insulation.
Insulation: 90-10 Russian Goose Down is used to fill the sleeping bag, with a minimum fill power of 800. Russian Goose Down is a high quality, feather down that feels lightweight and cosy whilst still offering a substantial amount of warmth in cold temperatures. The down in this product also comes from a Down Codex® Audited Source, making it a much more ethical and sustainable option than lesser quality down on the market.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 800 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 800 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
Down Codex® Audited Source - Having a Down Codex® Audited Source stamp indicates that there was no unnecessary harm caused when sourcing 100% of the down and that it came from an ethical, traceable source.
Lining: Ultrasoft™ 10D - Ultrasoft™ fabric provides a fast drying, lightweight and breathable layer for maximum comfort. This fabric uses superfine yarns and a densely woven structure to create a permeable, downproof lining with substantial tear resistance.
Outer: Drilite® Loft 10D - Drilite® is a specialised fabric that offers ultra-light, highly breathable, water resistant protection. This material uses a polyurethane membrane bonded to the reverse of a 100% nylon face to improve weather resistance, exceeding a hydrostatic head (HH) of 1500mm.
What are its features?
Mountain Equipment has designed the Xeros sleeping bag with their own Alpine Fit 2.0, marginally wider in vital areas than their previous Alpine fit. This fit still comes up slim, it is a tapered fit which helps maximise thermal efficiency without feeling restrictive. The Alpine Fit 2.0 allows better versatility in the overall fit and sizing of the bag, reaching a range of users without sacrificing performance and functionality. This shape also allows users to sleep in varied positions for ultimate comfort and an overall great night’s sleep.
The design also features a specialised EXL® system for optimum thermal efficiency, which gently cinches in the sleeping bag using lightly elasticated seams. The system helps minimise dead air space to provide extra warmth, pulling the fabric away from the down, giving it more room to fully loft.
A trapezoid baffle structure also helps to keep you feeling snug and cosy when tucked up inside. Trapezoid construction provides shaping to each baffle with a bigger surface area at the bottom to draw more insulation towards the body. The down still has space to loft, and the insulation can spread evenly across the bag whilst migration is reduced.
The sleeping bag uses ground level side seams, which allow the front layer of the sleeping bag to cocoon around the body for increased warmth and cosiness.
It's super important to keep the head warm when catching some z's under the stars - our heads are one of our most significant sources of body heat, so keeping it exposed on a cold night, you'll likely feel the chill.
A seven baffle set up in the hood keeps the down where you need it most. Even after heavy use, this hood will keep your head toasty all night long. It's anatomically shaped for the best coverage, and low volume reduces the bulk and gives you more breathing space for comfort.
Down at the toes, there's a six baffle anatomically shaped, offset foot box. The shaping of the foot box gives wriggly sleepers a little extra space, helping alleviate feelings of restriction within the sleeping bag and offering a much more natural sleeping position.
The main entrance into the bag uses a 140cm zip, with an integrated neck collar and Lode-Lock closure. The Lode-Lock closure is a magnetic fastening that is super easy to use with cold fingers or gloves when facing harsh conditions on mountaineering expeditions or snowy Alpine terrain. The positioning of the fastening and closure is unique to the Extreme Alpine series. It allows the user to sit upright inside the sleeping bag whilst the hood and neck collar remain secure, meaning you can operate a stove or hold a brew from inside. Almost like an extra, abnormally large outer layer for chilling out (not literally) at base camp! There is also a full-length, down-filled Gemini baffle running alongside to prevent cold spots at the zip.
A waterproof roll-top stuffsack is provided for on-the-go carry, alongside a storage cube for home storage. The best way to store a sleeping bag, especially when on the move, is to literally stuff it into your stuffsack. Randomly stuffing the sleeping bag helps prevent cold spots developing in the insulation from creases in the down that form if the bag is folded up for an extended period. At home, stuff it into the storage cube all the same. The storage cube is less compact than the stuffsack to enable the down to stay lofted when stored for a longer period - it enhances the warmth and contributes to maximum performance when it comes to using it again.
