What is the Blacktail 3?
Big Agnes' Blacktail 3 is a freestanding tent designed for three-season use, making it ideal for sleeping under the stars between spring and autumn. It has a lightweight, durable construction and a versatile set-up to accommodate adventures such as camping or backpacking.
What is it made of?
Fly: The fly is made with polyester, which is robust enough to take on more rugged or bushy environments without the additional weight and bulk. This material is treated with a waterproof polyurethane coating that provides a HH rating of 1500mm to keep you protected and dry in less-than-ideal conditions. All seams are taped to enhance the waterproofness and ensure that water doesn't leak through the stitching in heavy downpours.
Floor: Big Agnes has used the same material on the tent's base as the flysheet - lightweight, polyurethane-coated polyester. For additional reinforcement on rough surfaces or in wet conditions, you can also purchase the tent footprint separately.
Mesh: Mesh is used to construct the tent body/inner of the Blacktail 3. To be specific, it's a breathable polyester mesh that keeps your tent aired out nicely and provides versatility for humid conditions.
Poles: Tent poles comprise aluminium to provide maximum strength without excessive weight, making this tent easier to carry in a backpack for multi-day adventures.
What are its features?
Entry: The Blacktail 3 has two doors and two vestibules to maximise room inside the tent, giving you space to store your gear and backpacks in the doorway instead of your sleeping space. Two doors make the tent much more accessible when you're sharing, so you don't have to worry so much about standing on your campmate when nature calls in the middle of the night.
Storm flaps on the vestibule zippers help to keep the weather out. Dual zips allow you to ventilate when needed without leaving the entire door open - when it is open, you can stash it into the door keeper to prevent it from flapping around in the wind.
Space: There's enough space in the Blacktail 3 for three-people, or you could use it for two if you want some extra room. A symmetrical pole structure with pre-bent poles keeps the tent upright, and gives you just over a metre of headroom at its tallest point. The tent also comes with plastic clips that make it easy to attach the tent body to the pole frame for quick and easy assembly.
Storage: Four interior mesh pockets and two media pockets are handy for storing and organising essentials, keeping them accessible to save you from faffing around in the dark.
Ventilation: Plenty of ventilation options make the Blacktail 3 ideal for warmer climates - two fly vents, a low-vent on the vestibule doors, and even the double-zip function on the doors allow you to draw in airflow, helping to prevent heat build-up and condensation through the night.
Guylines, attachments and pegs: Pre-cut, reflective guylines and tensioners already attached to the fly make this tent ready-to-pitch, right out of the bag! Webbing loops on the tent corners are durable and are held down using the included aluminium stakes.
Optional extras: As mentioned, for extra reinforcement you can separately purchase a Blacktail 3 Footprint to protect the underside of your tent.
