What are the Citadel Mittens?
They're a two-part glove system that provides exceptional weather resistance and warmth for alpine climbing and mountaineering during the colder seasons. The Citadel Mittens feature a highly water-resistant, insulated, and windproof outer mitt, plus a removable mitten underneath for optimum performance and adaptability.
What are they made of?
The outer mitten is constructed using Drilite Loft® 20D material, which comprises a polyamide and elastane blend, finished with a PFAS-free DWR (durable water repellent).
Introduced almost 30 years ago, Drilite® Loft was totally ahead of its time. Drilite® Loft is a specialised fabric that offers lightweight, breathable, water-resistant protection. It uses a PU membrane, bonded to the reverse of a 100% nylon face, to exceed a hydrostatic head (HH) of 1500mm, making it ideal for both down and synthetically insulated products, often intended for extreme use and adventures in the depths of winter.
PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that cause detrimental harm to the environment. These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature via factory water waste, they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.
Three layers of PrimaLoft® Gold insulation are added to the outer mitt, alongside an additional layer of PrimaLoft® Gold Grip insulation strategically placed over the palm.
Furthermore, the palm is reinforced with strong and supple goatskin leather and a tough polyamide panel for maximum durability.
The removable inner mitt is made using the same Drilite® Loft 20D and Exolite 210 softshell, plus a leather palm insert. It also has a single finger and fibre pile lining for added warmth and softness.
What are their features?
As mentioned, the inner liner is removable, so you essentially get two pairs of mittens in one product, allowing maximum versatility and adaptability for different activities.
A single-handed drawcord closure makes it easy to cinch the hem of these gloves, sealing the warmth in. Carabiner carry loops and removable wrist tethers also provide various storage options for when you're not wearing the gloves, helping to prevent you from losing them on the go.
Lastly, these gloves come in a Modular Expedition fit, providing enough dexterity for a mitten without being excessively spacious to enhance performance.
