What are the Mixed Alpine Pants?
They're durable, protective trousers for navigating mixed conditions and challenging terrain. The Mixed Alpine pants feature waterproof panels where needed most, providing a hybrid between shell trousers and regular outdoor trousers, optimising comfort and performance with less weight and bulk.
What are they made of?
The outer shell fabric is a two-layer, 75-denier, 100% recycled polyester plain weave, which is durable yet lightweight and has a lesser environmental impact than conventional materials.
The upper-leg and seat panels comprise a three-layer 75-denier 100% recycled polyester plain weave, which provides more weather resistance and helps to resist wear and tear.
Both fabrics feature Gore-Tex® C-Knit® backer technology with a PFAS-free DWR (durable water-repellent) finish, encouraging water to bead off the material instead of soaking in.
PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that cause detrimental harm to the environment. These chemicals aren't able to break down, so once they reach nature via factory water waste, they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFC's are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.
The C-Knit™ backer uses a specifically engineered laminate construction to make it much lighter and softer than other Gore-Tex fabrics, yet just as (if not more) rugged. It uses extremely fine yarns to produce a slight stretch for flexibility, perfect for hikers, trekkers and backpackers who want optimum comfort with maximum protection from the elements.
This product is also made in a Fair Trade Factory™, giving Patagonia more control of the operations in the factories they choose to work with. Patagonia proudly offers more Fair Trade styles than any other apparel brand in the current market. But how does it work? Patagonia pays a premium for every item made in one of these factories, and this money goes directly to the factory workers. A democratically elected committee of Fair Trade workers will decide how this extra money gets spent in each Fair Trade factory. The program also promotes worker health and safety, and social and environmental compliance, while encouraging healthier dialogue between workers and management.
What are their features?
Waterproof panels at the front extend from the waist to below the knee and in the back across the seat to above the knee, as these parts of the trousers are high-wear areas most exposed to the elements.
Breathable side panels and a gusset at the crotch ensure optimum comfort and freedom of movement for stepping high.
A low-profile waist closure feels comfortable with layers over or underneath. The snap fastener and zip fly make fastening the trousers easy.
The Mixed Alpine Pants also feature laser-cut attachment points inside the waistband, which allow you to wear suspender straps if you prefer.
A zipped, side-thigh pocket keeps small belongings and valuables safe. This pocket is placed below where climbing harness leg loops would sit on the leg, ensuring full accessibility at all times without interfering with knee articulation.
Tough, low-bulk scuff guards and low-profile stretchy snow gaiters with tie-down loops make these trousers well-suited to deep snow conditions. Snap and zipper adjustment at the cuffs also accommodate alpine and ski-touring boots.
Last but certainly not least, these trousers include a concealed RECOO® reflector. This built-in reflector increases your safety tenfold by making you more searchable to rescuers in worst-case scenarios, without power or manual activation or adding weight or bulk to the product. RECCO® technology was initially designed in response to an avalanche tragedy and launched in 1983. It's a two-part system that enables rapid, directional pinpointing of your precise location with a harmonic radar, helping you feel more protected during extreme activities in remote environments.
