What are the Latok GTX Bib Trousers?
They're an updated version of Rab's exceptionally durable Latok Bibs, which now utilise the latest Gore-Tex Pro ePE technology for reliable waterproof protection with no intentionally added PFAS/PFC chemicals.
The Latok GTX Bibs are designed for hardcore mountain ascents and demanding winter conditions. Their construction offers excellent freedom of movement, whilst the Spectra® ripstop reinforcements add a new level of durability.
What are they made from?
Rab has built the bib's from robust 80 denier 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro ePE with Spectra® ripstop reinforced cramp on patches and integrated Matrix™ stretch back to deliver a balance of protection, durability and comfort.
The bib trousers' 3-layer construction comprises a tough 80 denier face fabric made from recycled polyamide (nylon), a GORE-TEX Pro ePE waterproof and windproof membrane and a smooth polyamide lining. The 80 denier face fabric is reassuringly robust, yet it's not too heavy or uncomfortable to hold you back. It's thick enough to deal with demanding climbs, scrambles and hikes in rocky terrain where it's likely to take a beating.
GORE-TEX Pro ePE is the most rugged, durable and breathable membrane, designed to withstand abrasion in the toughest terrain. It offers maximum waterproof and windproof protection whilst still being extremely breathable. Thanks to its versatility, it's perfect for mountain use and will keep you comfortable in changeable environments whilst minimising the accumulation of sweat, keeping you cool during high output activity. It has an exceptional Hydrostatic Head rating of 28,000mm to reliably shield you from wet weather in challenging mountain environments.
This latest Gore-Tex® ePE technology is made using recycled fabrics and without the use of PFAS/PFC chemicals for a significantly reduced environmental impact. If you were wondering, PFAS/PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals' that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. This is why many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, and this latest membrane from Gore-Tex® is a big step forward for the brand.
The trousers are finished with a PFC-Free DWR (durable water repellent) coating to encourage rain, snow and mud to bead off the trousers instead of soaking in, helping to keep the waterproof membrane clean, protected and in tip-top shape.
Rab has used Matrix™ double-weave soft stretch fabric across the back of the bibs for added comfort and moisture wicking. Matrix™ double-weave is an air-permeable fabric that breathes exceptionally well, keeping you cool while working hard. Its stretchy nature allows it to easily conform to the body and provide freedom of movement across the back for comfort when bending down, stretching and taking high steps up.
The Spectra® ripstop reinforced cramp on patches use a super tough grid of polyethylene fibres woven into a solid yet lightweight Cordura fabric. The fibres have a high molecular weight, making them 15 times stronger than steel and bullet-resistant materials! It's complete with a high UV resistance to help prevent any sun damage or deterioration when used regularly on exposed routes. This technology brings a whole new level to technical fabrics, creating something incredibly abrasion, UV and water resistant while being extremely lightweight.
What are their features?
The trousers' bib design provides better coverage than trousers and eliminates the risk of them slipping down partway through your adventure. They feature a dual-sided hook and loop adjustment to optimise the fit around the waist, allowing you to layer effectively without feeling restricted or uncomfortable.
Each side features a full-length YKK® AquaGuard ® zip for easy on and off’s over various chunky footwear. The AquaGuard zips are taped to enhance their water repellency, helping to prevent water seeping in through the fastening when it's fully zipped.
The knees are articulated to provide a more natural shape and a little extra room in vital areas to prevent you from splitting the trousers on steep ascents.
At the hem, you'll find a snap adjuster which can adapt the fit around the ankles to accommodate different sizes and types of hiking or mountaineering boots. An internal snow gaiter prevents your boots from filling up with snow in gnarly winter conditions. The lower hems are reinforced with super-tough Spectra® ripstop crampon patches to reduce the risk of snagging if you catch a crampon on the material as you're moving.
For storage, there is a single YKK® AquaGuard® zipped external thigh pocket that is bellowed at the bottom for maximum capacity. It's ideal for stowing a GPS device or extra snacks and energy gels to keep you going.
Finally, the bib's features Rab's regular fit, which offers enough room to layer underneath, without being too big and bulky.
