Montane History
Over 30 Years of Lightweight Mountain Performance
With a history spanning over 30 years, Montane has established itself as a go-to choice among serious mountain professionals, endurance athletes, adventurers, trail runners and outdoor enthusiasts seeking lightweight, high-performance clothing and equipment.
Montane was established in 1993 by founding directors Chris Roff and Jake Doxat, who bonded over their shared passion for mountaineering, adventure and love of the great outdoors whilst on expedition in southern Chile. Initially, they created groundbreaking jackets to protect adventurers in extreme conditions, called the 'extreme range', which is still used by outdoor professionals and mountain rescue teams worldwide.
After their early success, Montane quickly emerged as pioneers in the outdoor industry. In 1999, they created the Featherlite Smock, which revolutionised packable, windproof, and breathable outdoor clothing. This super light jacket established them as 'the pioneers of Featherlite', a category they are still world renowned for today.
As time went on, Montane continued to evolve with the changing landscape of adventure, creating early partnerships with the world's leading technical fabric manufacturers, such as Gore-Tex and PrimaLoft. They engineered cutting-edge materials that redefine the possibilities of outdoor clothing, establishing themselves at the forefront of high-performance, lightweight and breathable gear.
Throughout the years, Montane has aligned themselves with serious mountain professionals, the British Antarctic Survey, various Mountain Rescue Teams and some of the world's toughest endurance events, such as the Montane Yukon Arctic Ultra and the Montane Dragons Back Race. This unique team of athletes and professionals consists of ultra-endurance runners, high-altitude mountaineers and inspiring climbers, who put Montane's kit to the test in the most challenging environments and events. This rigorous testing ensures their products are not only highly durable but supremely functional.
