What is the Gangstang Jacket?
The Ganagstang Jacket is primarily designed to be used in the depth of winter as your "belay" jacket. Climbers will know what we mean; but for the rest of you, it means it's designed to be thrown on over the top of all of your layers (including your shell jacket) when you stop for any reason so you can retain all that lovely heat you have generated while moving. It is highly water-resistant, warm, and the materials used to make this jacket means it's a more sustainable choice than others out there.
What is it made from?Outer FabricsThe hood, shoulders, arms and side panels are made from Pertex Quantum Pro. This fabric has been used in these areas for two reasons; one, it is more durable than that used in the main body of the jacket, and these areas are more prone to wear from rocks and backpack straps. Then reason two is because some of these areas (hood, shoulders & arms) are more exposed to the rain, so having this highly water-resistant fabric here just makes sense.
The main body of the jacket uses the 100% recycled nylon Pertex Quantum ECO fabric that still offers excellent weather protection from wind and showers and is great for the environment!
InsulationThe core of the Gangstang Jacket uses a hefty 133g/m² Primaloft Gold insulation (made using 55% recycled fibres) to keep all your vital parts nice and toastie. Then in naturally warmer areas and extremities (the hood, arms and side panels), Montane have used a 100g/m² version of the same insulation.
Inner fabricYou have Montane's proprietary 100% recycled PEAQ Synthetic ECO lining to finish the jacket, which is super smooth for effortless laying.
FeaturesI have mentioned it above, but you get body-mapped insulation to keep the crucial bits warm, which also helps the jacket's overall weight and makes it less bulky under the arm... Because the last thing you want is to throw this on and feel like the Michelin Man.
The hood is fully adjustable with a stiffened peak, keeping it fixed to your head or your helmet if you are climbing, as it is also helmet-compatible, and the stiffened peak helps keep rain or snow from falling on your face.
The full-length, two-way YKK Vislon front zip with internal storm flap seals out wind and gives you easy access to your harness or to dump excess heat.
The zipped chest pocket is great for stowing your GPS device or other items you need close-to-hand. You also have two insulated zipped hand pockets that are microfleece-lined, ideal for warming and drying cold, wet hands before putting them back into your gloves.
On the inside of the jacket, there are 2 sizeable mesh-lined dump pockets for quickly stashing things your gloves when quickly you need your hands for rope work or using your stove while making that all-important brew.
Finally, the low profile cuffs and adjustable hem allow you to customise airflow and weather protection.
Where does it fit in the layering system?
As I alluded to above, the Gangstang Jacket is designed as a belay jacket, primarily used by climbers to throw over all their layers while on a belay stance on multi-pitched climbs. Its purpose is to seal in the heat while you wait for your partner to finish their pitch. This term has been adopted by the entire outdoor industry. However, a better way of explaining it is to call it a "stop/go jacket", a jacket you put on as soon as you stop and then put away as soon as you start moving and generating more again. So it's perfect for winter use by all outdoor enthusiasts.
