What is the Cirrus Flex Hoody?
It's an update to Rab's popular Cirrus Flex Hoody, a warm and breathable synthetically insulated jacket ideal for various outdoor and everyday activities in cold climates.
The update includes larger baffles and a new warmer synthetic insulation called PrimaLoft® Silver Rise. This insulation boasts a unique construction and a warmth-to-weight ratio comparable to high-quality natural down, making it a great alternative to a down jacket.
What is it made from?
Insulation: The Cirrus Flex uses PrimaLoft® Silver Rise synthetic insulation for warmth, which is made from 100% recycled polyamide from post-consumer recycled material. PrimaLoft® Silver Rise is lightweight and highly durable insulation with a unique construction that allows it to resist compression. It boasts an impressive warmth-to-weight ratio comparable to high-quality natural down without any of the faff, making it a great vegan-friendly alternative to down that can still perform even when wet.
The Cirrus Flex uses a combination of synthetic insulation and Rab's Thermic stretch fleece panels along the sides to increase airflow, breathability and comfort. This fleece allows air to pass through and sweat to escape, preventing you from overheating when working hard.
Outer and lining: The jacket’s outer and lining are constructed from 20D Pertex Quantum, made from recycled polyamide. Pertex Quantum is an incredibly lightweight yet durable material that will protect you from wind and light rain. It's also exceptionally breathable and highly packable, making it ideal for more intense activities such as mountaineering and climbing, when you may be layering and de-layering more frequently and will need to pack the jacket away.
This material is coated in a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) to allow light rain and snow to bead and roll off the surface. However, please note that this does not make the jacket waterproof.
Side panels: For the stretchy side panels Rab has selected Thermic™ fleece, which comprises polyester and spandex. Thermic™ stretch fleece balances durability, warmth and fast-drying properties to provide the ultimate performance fleece fabric that adapts to various activities and conditions.
What are its features?
The Cirrus Flex features a close-fitting under-helmet hood to keep you warm and protected from the elements. The hood boasts a hybrid construction of warm fleece and cosy synthetic insulation for maximum breathability and thermal efficiency with minimal bulk.
The jacket is fastened with a centre front zip with an insulated zip baffle to help prevent heat loss through the zip and a fleece-lined chin guard to avoid any discomfort around the face when fully zipped. The sleeves are articulated to ensure a natural range of movement that's not restricted, making this jacket suitable for various outdoor activities where you might be reaching up high or stretching.
For storage, you'll find two zipped hand pockets for your trail essentials, such as a mobile phone, snacks and car keys, whilst also doubling as a cosy home for cold hands.
Finally, semi-elasticated cuffs and a single-sided hem adjustment with an anti-snag tether help trap warm air inside the jacket, keeping you warm and comfortable even when popping it on over bulky layers.
Disclaimer: Going forward, Rab has stopped providing stuff sacks for most of their insulated jackets as a responsible step toward eliminating fabric waste. This helps reduce the creation of unnecessary fabric, cord, and trim from unused stuff sacks while also saving the potential emissions used to manufacture them. Instead, they are available to purchase separately and are now made from offcut materials and end-of-roll fabrics for an even lower environmental impact.
