What is the Latok GTX Jacket?
Rab has updated the renowned Latok Jacket, with the latest Gore-Tex Pro ePE and RECCO® technology for added safety in challenging mountain environments. Taking over from the Latok Extreme Jacket, it's a highly durable waterproof shell jacket built for gnarly mountain climbs and expeditions where functionality is at the pinnacle of your wardrobe. It features a cleaner, timeless aesthetic and feels substantially robust, yet comfortable to wear.
What is it made from?
Rab has built the jacket from 80 denier 3-layer GORE-TEX Pro ePE for maximum protection from the elements, without the use of PFAS/ PFC chemicals.
The Latok 80 denier face fabric is built from recycled polyamide (nylon) and is reassuringly robust. It's thick enough for Highland hikes, climbs and scrambles where it's likely to take a beating, yet it's not too heavy or uncomfortable to hold you back. It has an exceptional Hydrostatic Head rating of 28,000mm to reliably shield you from wet weather in challenging mountain environments.
GORE-TEX Pro ePE is the most rugged, durable and breathable membrane, designed to withstand abrasion in the toughest terrain. It offers maximum waterproof and windproof protection whilst still being extremely breathable. Thanks to its versatility, it's perfect for mountain use and will keep you comfortable in changeable environments whilst minimising the accumulation of sweat, keeping you cool during high-output activity.
This latest Gore-Tex® ePE technology is made using recycled fabrics and without the use of PFAS/PFC chemicals for a significantly reduced environmental impact. If you were wondering, PFAS/PFCs are per or poly-fluorinated chemicals, aka 'forever chemicals' that stay permanently in the environment and cause lasting damage to our ecosystems. This is why many companies are working towards a completely PFC-free future, and this latest membrane from Gore-Tex® is a big step forward for the brand.
The jacket is finished with a PFC-Free DWR (durable water repellent) coating to encourage rain, snow and mud to bead off the jacket instead of soaking in, helping to keep the jacket's waterproof membrane clean, protected and in tip-top shape. To find out more about how to care for your waterproof jacket and why you should maintain the DWR, check out our YouTube video here.
What are its features?
Starting from the top, there's a helmet-compatible hood with a three-point adjustment system to provide maximum coverage from the elements, whether you're wearing a helmet or a beanie hat. The hood has a stiffened, flexible polymer peak at the top, which helps to redirect rain away from the face. The adjusters cinch the hood right in around the face and use concealed internal cordlocks that can easily be adjusted on the go with one hand, even when wearing gloves, reducing time spent faffing so you can focus on the challenge at hand.
The sleeves are articulated for a more natural shape whilst offering improved freedom of movement and arm lift, perfect for climbing and scrambling up steep ascents. The cuffs are shaped and extended for added coverage across the hands and have a simple hook and loop adjustment system, allowing you to optimise the fit over gloves or mittens.
The Latok features a two-way YKK® VISLON® AquaGuard® centre front zip with lower snap fastener to allow extra ventilation without entirely undoing the jacket- handy on steep ascents, where you may need more freedom of movement around the hips and lower body. At the top of the centre zip is a fleece-lined chin guard, so when it's fastened all the way up, it feels smooth next to the skin to prevent any discomfort around the face.
Underneath the arms are two-way fully venting pit zips, also with YKK® Aquaguard zips and haptic zip pulls for quick and easy ventilation. If you're feeling a little clammy, simply open the zips to increase the airflow inside the jacket.
For storage, you'll find four external pockets, two Napoleon chest pockets and two hand pockets that have wide openings for easy access to your essentials on the go. Each pocket has a YKK® Aquaguard zip, which is also waterproof to ensure none of your valuables get wet throughout the day. Inside the jacket are two more pockets, one zipped and one mesh, to carry more precious cargo that you'd prefer to keep a little closer to you, like a mobile phone, keys, or extra cash for emergencies.
At the bottom hem of the jacket, a dual-sided rear hem adjustment allows you to cinch the jacket in further with one hand, helping to keep the weather out and warm air inside the jacket.
The jacket features a regular fit to offer a little extra room to maximise freedom of movement and space for your own technical layering system underneath, without feeling restricted.
Finally, Rab has added an integrated RECCO® reflector for added safety in challenging mountain environments, just in case. This passive transponder is searchable to professional rescue teams in the event of an avalanche or emergency on the mountain.
