What is the Microlight Summit?

So, for those of you who aren’t familiar withRab’sMicrolightJackets, where have you been?Thesethings areten years old! Over the past decadethey’vebeen tried, tested, loved and havebecome firmly established as the iconic lightweight down jacket for climbers, hikers and mountaineers. But now it’s time to meet the new generation;born from the classic, theMicrolightSummit is inspired by innovative fabric developments, yet remains firmly rootedinthe jackets original purpose; pure alpinism. This really is a technological breakthrough andquite frankly, it’sblownourminds–It’s got all the durability, style and quality that we’ve come to expect from Rabwithsome incrediblenewfabric technologycalled Pertex Quantum Infinity Weave; more about this later. TheMicrolightSummitis designed forreal end users who want to balance weight, warmthandpackabilitywith somegloriouslytechy features. It’s hugely versatile and reliable and works superbly as an insulating layer as part of your overall layering system.

What is the Microlight Summit made from?

Outer fabric: Okay, this is where the magic happens. Rab have developed an incredibly innovative new fabric calledPertex Quantum Infinity Weave. Traditionally, down insulated jackets are made by taking 2 pieces of fabric (the inner and outer of the jacket) and stitchingor bonding themtogether to create baffles (tubes). If a down jacket didn't have baffles, all the down would sink to the bottomand you wouldn’t be very warm at all. Pertex Quantum Infinity Weaveismade using onlyONEpieceof fabric, not two.Pertex weave the yarns of the fabric in and out of itself to create those essential baffle tubes in one singular construction(a bit like an infinity symbol, funnily enough). It’s hard to get your head around, butthe result completely eliminatesthe need to stitch 2 pieces of fabric together, getting rid of all thestitching in the baffles. Thisincreases weather resistanceand boosts warmth;in fact Rab usesexactly the sameamount of downin this jacketasintheir standardMicrolight AlpineJacketbutthis oneis warmer. Pertex Quantum Infinity Weave fabricoffersincreasedprotection from the elements, but it’sstillnotcompletelywaterproof! Pleasealsobear in mind that the fabric is lightweight so use your common sense; if you are going for a scramble ordoing some gnarly mountaineering, cover it with something appropriate; ahard-shell jacket or lightweight softshell would be ideal.Thefabric is also really slippy, so the MicrolightSummitwill glideeasily over or under additionallayers,so it doesn’t restrict movement.

Insulation: Because this incrediblefabric is so lightand flexibleit allows the down inside to fully loft to ensure you get the most out of that luxurious insulation. OK,let’s get technical for a moment. Loft is a word used to describe the downs ability to expand, basically how “fluffy” it can become. Themore “fluffy”down is the more warm air it can trap and the better it will insulate. The universal measure of “fluffiness” is called“Fill Power” and it determines the amount of space one ounce of down will occupy in cubic inches when allowed to reach its maximum loft. So, the Microlight Alpine has afill-power of 750, so one ounce of that lovely RDS certified down will expand to fill 750 cubic inches of space. Basically, the higher the Fill Power the warmer a jacket will be. You may have noticed that I called the down “RDS” Certified down, this stands for Responsible Down Standard, and means that the down comes from well cared for and happy geese. As well as being fully RDS certified, every cluster of down has been treated with special Nikwax Hydrophobic stuff to ensure they resist moisture, retain more heat, loft better, and dry much quicker than untreated down. This does not in any way make this a waterproof jacket, so always carry a shell jacket…because it will rain!

What are the main features?

Let’s start at the top and work down through all the features. The Microlight Summit features a fully helmet compatible hood which also fits closely without a helmet thanks to the internal stretch seams which reduce the size of the hood without the need for heavy cord adjustment. Extra adjustment can be made with the small Velcro tab on the rear of the hood. The internal stretch gaiter seals out wind around your face which helps to keep your ears warm in strong head winds. A laminated brim with a flexible polymer peak stops it all flopping down over your eyes. Extremely comfortable Lycra bound cuffs fit easily over gloves and mitts and sit snug to your wrists to help seal out the cold and they also allow the sleeves to be rolled up to aid ventilation if you're starting to cook. The two-way front YKK VISLON zip helps to seal out the weather and makes this jacket harness compatible, perfect for belaying on cold winter days. There is even an insulated zip baffle and chin guard to make those exposed belays more bearable. Storage wise, the jacket has two YKK VISLON zipped, harness compatible hand warmer pockets in the front and an internal zipper security pocket. The jacket also features a hem drawcord to help seal out cold updrafts. You get articulated arms to improve your range of movement, this is particularly important on scrambles or climbs and when using ice tools and walking poles.

How does the Summit fit?

As atechnicalinsulatinglayer, the Microlight Summit has been given a longer length and slimmer fit than the standard Microlight Alpine to really optimise its performance. This thing really is a pleasure to wear, it moves with you and you hardly notice you’ve got it on at all. It's a slim, snug fit to optimise warmth, yet you can still easily fit a layer or two underneath for those really chilly outings.

Where does it fit in the layering system?

The MicrolightSummitis asuperlightweight, breathableandpackabledownjacketmaking it perfect as a hugely versatile insulating layer depending on your activity level and the weather conditions. It also works perfectly well asaprotective outer jacketon dry, freezingdays. Layering is not a precise science and there is no one perfect system that will suit every person, situation or the weather conditions. Some of us feel the cold, others, like me, get hot very quickly, but for more advice on using layers please check outourvideo.

Summary

If you've been searching for a technical down jacket which is a step forward in terms of fabric and fit innovation, the Microlight Summit should be at the top of your list. How to wash your down products

Having spent years talking to people about down products, whether that’s a jacket, sleeping bag or even a pair of slippers, very few have had the confidence to go ahead and wash the product on their own, especially when they have just spent an arm and a leg on it. This small guide is here to explain that it’s not as daunting and utterly terrifying as it first appears.

Step one: Before you even get near that washing machine, wipe off any excess mud or dirt that may be lingering on the surface of the jacket, as this will clog up the washing machine, eventually rendering it useless.

We recommend the use of Nikwax Down Wash Direct for down products as it’s one hundred percent environmentally friendly and will wash and re-proof the garment without the use of bleach or any other nasty chemicals. What household washing agents can (and often do) is remove the water repellent coating on the fabric of the jacket, whilst also damaging the delicate array of feathers inside.

Step two: We’ll assume in this instance that you’ve been washing other products prior to your down jacket and have used a bleach based detergent. Therefore it’s a good idea to run the washing machine for half an hour or so without anything inside to rinse it clean before adding the Nikwax or putting the jacket in. Also, don’t forget to remove the detergent drawer to give it a wash inside, outside and behind, as detergent can clog up and still enter the washing machine if not cleaned out thoroughly. This ensures that any remnants of detergent are removed and that the Nikwax products will work effectively.

Step three: Set the washing machine to a cold wash (check the garments care label, most tend to be around 30°C) and as delicate as possible. Most washing machines have a “wool” cycle which is ideal.

Step four: If using Nikwax Down Wash Direct, place 100ml in either the tray or directly into the washing machine inside a small pot/ball. If you choose to use another washing product, place the appropriate amount in the machine in the same way.

Step five: Set the washing machine to run on a slow cycle, allowing plenty of time for the jacket to soak up the cleaning/re-proofing product. Most washing machines will have a pre-set time for different washing cycles.

When the cycle has finished be prepared for a shock, your precious bit of kit will come out looking like a soggy ball of material. But don’t worry, you haven’t ruined it, it’s just that all that fluffy down insulation has become water logged and has clumped together. The trick is to now get all that down nice and dry to reinstate its superb insulating properties. Simply hanging it up in a warm place will not work that well. It will take days to properly dry and you will have to constantly break up the clumps to get it thoroughly dry. The best way is to use a tumble dryer; either a domestic one for smaller items or a commercial drier for sleeping bags.

Step six: Pop the garment into the dryer and make sure to select a low heat; a high heat runs the risk of melting seams and fabrics within the garment. It sounds weird, but shove a few tennis balls into the drier with the garment; the tennis balls will bounce around and help to break up the clumps of down. Every 20 minutes, pull the jacket out of the dryer and lie the jacket down on a table. Run your hands over the jacket until you find a 'clump' or ball of down; tease apart this down clump and spread it evenly into the baffle. Once you're confident you've pulled apart every clump to the best of your ability, stick it back in for another 20 minutes. Keep repeating this until there are no more clumps left.

Step seven: When the cycle has finished and you are sure that you have got the garment as dry as possible, hang it up in a warm dry place, an airing cupboard is ideal, for 24 hours. This drives out the last of any dampness and allows the down to loft fully. Take it out and give it a good shake and, hey presto, it’ll be as good as new.
