What is the Borealis Vest?
The Borealis Vest is a lightweight softshell gilet designed for high-energy mountain activities where a full jacket would be too much. It's built for moving fast in changeable conditions, focusing protection around your core to reduce wind chill, while leaving your arms free to regulate temperature and move freely.
Materials & Technology
Matrix™ Single Weave Stretch Fabric (Recycled)
The Borealis Vest is made from single-weave stretch nylon, which is a lightweight and stretchy softshell fabric with fantastic freedom of movement.
Matrix™ is a specialised line of softshell fabrics selected by Rab for their unique performance qualities. Matrix™ single weave stretch nylon comprises polyamide and elastane and is wind-resistant, air-permeable and offers excellent levels of breathability. It's breathable construction allows moisture to escape easily, helping regulate temperature during high-output activities, whilst providing enough wind resistance to take the chill off exposed conditions.
This comfortable material also provides UPF protection to shield your skin from sun exposure. It's also exceptionally light and stretchy, offering unhindered movement for climbing and scrambling in warm climates.
Fluorocarbon-Free DWR Finish
The vest is treated with a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) coating to provide light water resistance and encourage moisture to bead off the fabric rather than soaking in. However, please note that this does not make the material waterproof.
Features and Functionality
Breathable Core Protection
The Borealis' sleeveless design focuses warmth and wind resistance around your core, where you need it most, keeping you comfortable during various high-output activities, preventing you from overheating. This low bulk design and lightweight construction also make it more comfortable for layering.
Stretch and Freedom of Movement
The lightweight Matrix™ softshell fabric construction offers excellent stretch, allowing the vest to move with your body, making it particularly useful for climbing or scrambling, where unrestricted movement is essential.
Harness-Compatible Chest Pocket
For storage, you'll find a single zipped chest pocket, ideal for stashing a mobile phone, GPS device or energy gels, keeping your essentials secure and out of the way of a climbing harness or rucksack hipbelt.
Lightweight and Packable
The Borealis Vest weighs in at just 141g, and its low bulk construction offers a small pack size, making it an ideal wind-resistant layer to carry in your kit, ready for when the winds pick up, without taking up too much valuable space in your pack.
Low-Profile Adjustments
The vest is finished with elasticated armholes and a low-profile adjustable hem to help seal in warmth and keep cold winds at bay without adding any uncomfortable bulk to the design. .
