What are the Anti Freeze Mitts?
The Anti Freeze Mitts are Montane's answer to deep winter gloves. These down filled mitts offer plenty of warmth and packability for their weight, making them an excellent accessory for braving cold mountain conditions. They're sure to keep your hands toasty and protected in cold climates and won't take up excessive room in your kit bag when you pack them away.
What are they made of?
Insulation: These mittens are filled using 90/10 water resistant HyperDry™ down with 750+ fill power.
HyperDRY™ down is down insulation that has been treated to add water repellency. The treatment is PFC free, makes the insulation up to 40 times more hydrophobic than untreated down and four times faster drying. HyperDRY™ treatments also use 25 times less water and five times less chemistry to achieve the same level of performance as conventional methods.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 750 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 750 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from light rain or sweat and condensation that may build up inside the gloves. PFC free Hydrophobic finishes like HyperDRY™ are not fluorinated, and therefore don't cause damage to the environment like previously used fluorinated treatments - an excellent feature for more eco-conscious adventurers!
Outer: The outer is constructed with 100% recycled Pertex® Quantum Eco that feels lightweight and comfortable. The material is designed to promote the insulation's loft and helps trap air to improve the efficiency and warmth of the down. The material is treated with a PFC-free DWR that encourages any spills or light rain to bead off the fabric.
Lining: The recycled PEAQ Down Eco liner feels soft and smooth next to the skin. It's breathable enough to manage temperature yet durable to ensure heavy use doesn't affect the condition and performance of the mittens overall. Like the hydrophobic treatment, the DWR (durable water repellent) is also PFC-free, which is more sustainable than regular DWR treatments, as it doesn't use any chemicals that are harmful to the environment.
What are the features?
The overall construction uses baffles to maintain the spread of the down and optimise loft for maximum warmth. An internal stretch wrist gaiter gives extra protection from the elements while helping retain heat and providing plenty of flexibility around the joint for handling equipment.
There's also an external, adjustable cuff allowing you to optimise the fit around glove liners or bare wrists.
We recommend carrying multiple pairs of gloves with you in case of emergency and unpredictable weather out on the hill. Generally, softshell gloves are great for the first part of your adventure. They aren't overly warm, giving your body the chance to generate its own heat once you get moving, so you don't get hot too quickly. A waterproof option is, of course, advisable for rainy weather alongside a warmer pair of gloves - insulated works best - for emergencies or freezing conditions. This is why the Anti Freeze Gloves bring such an advantage, as they pack so small! And if you're gloves can pack down tiny, having multiple pairs in your day pack won't take up excessive room.
