What is the Palisades Pack?
It's the latest version of Ruffwear's Palisades Pack, their largest-volume doggy backpack, designed to let your dog comfortably carry their own kit whilst multi-day hiking, trekking, or wild camping with your furry best friend. It boasts a detailed construction for maximum comfort and minimal bounce, and features removable saddlebags to allow the harness to be worn on its own for quick excursions and relaxing around camp.
What is it made from?
The Palisade Pack is built from a lightweight yet robust 150-denier ripstop polyester, that's made from 40% recycled materials. This material is built to withstand the rigours of everyday use by your dog without holding them back. Whether they're having a good ole scratch or just rolling around in the dirt - dogs and abrasion go hand in hand.
This fabric is also bluesign® approved, meaning it's manufactured in a way that is safe for the environment, workers and consumers. bluesign® certifications ensure that the materials used avoid harmful substances, use reduced air and water emissions, increase resource productivity, and the production line is more transparent and trustworthy.
The back and belly panels are padded with moulded and perforated EVA foam for exceptional comfort and breathability to easily support the weight of the packs and help distribute it across your dog's body.
The secure back V-ring leash attachment point is made from Anodized 6061-T6 aluminium, a sturdy yet lightweight metal that will ensure a dependable collar-leash connection for added confidence knowing that your pup is safe and secure. Whilst the front and rear leash attachments are made from an ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene webbing, for excellent durability.
What are its features?
As mentioned above, the Palisades Pack features removable saddle bags that allow you to lighten your dog's load when crossing streams, stopping for lunch or setting up camp. Underneath the saddlebags the harness features two low profile intergrated pockets that allow you to keep your dog’s essentials to hand for quick side excursions.
The saddle bags feature a radial cut that helps distribute the pack's weight forward onto the dog's shoulders for maximum comfort and to keep it well out of the way on the trail. Ruffwear have added little 'flopper stopper' tabs on the underside of the packs to stop them flopping around with each tail wagging step, providing a more natural carrying experience for your dog.
Inside the packs, there are internal mesh pockets to help you divide the contents and put heavier items closer to their body, which helps them distribute the weight better, without affecting their centre of gravity. There are also daisy chain loops on either side to allow you to attach additional items of gear on the outside of the pack.
A well-placed handle and load-dispersing chest/belly panel make for easy lift-and-assist manoeuvres over styles or difficult patches of terrain, whilst still being comfortable enough for everyday wear. This easy assistance makes this harness a great option for dogs who need a little boost when the path ahead is anything but flat.
Three leash attachment points give you some versatility across various terrain. The V-ring to the back is ideal for everyday walks, whereas the back reinforced webbing loop is ideal for longer, fast-paced adventures when you want to keep the lead well and truly out of their way. The third reinforced webbing loop at the dog's chest is ideal for gently redirecting your dog if they are pulling on the lead.
The harness features six adjustment points so you can easily find a secure fit for dogs of all shapes and sizes. Whilst the sturdy side-release buckles make it easier to pop it on and off.
Reflective trims across the harness help to boost visibility in low light, whether walking near roads or simply to help keep track of them during nighttime off-lead adventures. A Ruffwear Beacon™ (sold separately) can also be attached to the harness via the convenient attachment point for added night-time visibility.
How much weight can my dog carry?
It's recommended that your dog carry no more than 25% of their body weight, including pack weight and its contents. If your dog is new to dog packs, start with a light load and work up to a heavier load as your dog gets used to wearing the pack.
