What is the Batura Jacket?
This jacket is built to withstand extreme conditions. It can be used on expedition, for winter alpine adventures, or even locally by those out in the cold for extended periods, ideally taking part in more stationary activities. We're talking film crews, wildlife photographers or those who enjoy a spot of fishing at the weekend.
Overall, it has a clean looking finish with minimal embellishments on the exterior - a very handsome piece, if I do say so myself.
What is it made of?
Constructed with a 40D Recycled Pertex® Shield 2L outer and 20D Pertex® Quantum lining, this jacket offers fantastic protection from the elements, insulated with European Goose Down.
Insulation: The jacket uses 800 fill power, R.D.S Certified European Goose Down, offering maximum loft (fluffiness) and insulation.
European Goose Down is fantastic quality down - it has larger clusters than Duck Down which improves the warmth to weight ratio. The clusters are made up of tiny feather strands that trap heat, which is why it's so important to get a quality jacket with construction that allows its insulation to loft effectively!
The down is treated with a Nikwax fluorocarbon free Hydrophobic finish, which adds light water resistance to the down itself.
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick break down.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 800 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 800 cubic inches of space when fully lofted. For a full explanation, you can check out our YouTube video on fill power by clicking here.
R.D.S - The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the down is sourced from happy birds who haven't been plucked and have been well cared for.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you're warming up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon free Hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - a bonus for more eco-conscious adventurers.
Outer fabric: The main fabric is 40D Recycled Pertex® Shield. Pertex® Shield is durable, waterproof and highly breathable, creating a comfortable yet protective layer that doesn't feel too heavy or bulky. The material is coated with a fluorocarbon-free DWR, offering extra protection against wet weather, without using any chemicals that would cause damage to the environment.
Lining: The lining uses 20D Recycled Pertex® Quantum, which contains incredibly fine yarns and has a tight weave to create a soft, windproof layer that also helps improve the efficiency of the insulation by trapping more warm air inside.
What are its features?
Alongside warmth, the Batura Jacket offers fantastic weather protection. The seams are fully taped, stopping water from seeping through the stitching in heavy downpours. The combination of seam taping and Pertex® Shield outer fabric creates a really reliable layer of protection than can take you anywhere.
It has bonded, narrow boxwall construction for reduced weight, bulk, and maximum warmth. A boxwall structure gives the down more space to fluff up than classic stitch-through baffles. The more the insulation lofts, the more heat it can trap inside. Boxwall baffles use less stitching, meaning fewer tiny holes in the fabric for cold air to pass through, so it's more insulative than down jackets with stitch-through construction.
The jacket has an adjustable hood with internal cordlocks, and rear hook and loop volume control to cinch it in and protect your head from the cold - a super important feature as our heads are our biggest source of warmth! A wired, stiffened peak is built into the hood offering a sounder structure. It stops the hood from sagging as it gets wet, keeping your face more sheltered and dry.
A two-way YKK® VISLON® front zip offers multiple solutions to dump heat or even fit around a climbing harness. The zip has a double storm flap and synthetic insulated baffle running down it, keeping the warmth in and the weather out.
If your mitts are getting a little chilly, there are two YKK® Aquaguard® zipped hand warmer pockets that sit behind the insulation, offering an alternative to gloves, or even some extra heat if you're already wearing them.
There is also two more YKK® VISLON® Aquaguard® chest pockets in front of the insulation, both perfect for stowing away bits and bobs you need to keep within reach, such as snacks or a GPS. Inside you'll find two large mesh pockets, which are fantastic for storing larger belongings that you want to keep dry.
The cuffs have a hook and loop adjustment, which are chunky enough to use with gloves, and really simple to use. They offer alternative fittings around the wrist, so you can adapt them to the conditions you're facing and to your layering system effectively.
Speaking of adjustments, there's also a dual-sided rear adjustment that helps pull the jacket tighter to the lower back, sealing out nasty gusts of wind. The dropped hem also increases coverage around the lower back to maximise warmth and protection.
How does it fit?
The Batura fits into Rab's 'Regular Fit' bracket. It has enough room to pop a couple of layers underneath, yet is still snug and close to the body to keep you feeling cosy. It still offers plenty of freedom of movement where you need it most, making it a versatile addition to your wardrobe.
Disclaimer: Going forward, Rab has stopped providing stuff sacks for most of their insulated jackets as a responsible step toward eliminating fabric waste. This helps reduce the creation of unnecessary fabric, cord, and trim from unused stuff sacks while also saving the potential emissions used to manufacture them. Instead, they are available to purchase separately and are now made from offcut materials and end-of-roll fabrics for an even lower environmental impact.
