What is the Positron Pro Hoody?
Primarily designed for alpine and mountain expeditions up to 6000m, the Positron Pro Jacket is highly versatile and suitable for hill-walkers, climbers, and mountaineers looking for a super warm jacket with high levels of breathability and protection from all but the worst of the weather.
Updated for this season with a fresh, clean aesthetic and latest Grangers Down Defend® hydrophobic down, the Positron Pro delivers excellent weather protection and warmth for exposed routes and challenging environments.
What is it made from?
The Positron Pro Jacket uses a 30 denier recycled Pertex® Quantum Pro outer shell, 20 denier recycled Pertex® Quantum lining and premium 800 fill power hydrophobic down insulation.
Insulation: The jacket uses 256g of 800 fill power, R.D.S Certified European Goose Down, offering maximum loft (fluffiness) and insulation.
European Goose Down is fantastic quality down - it has larger clusters than Duck Down which improves the warmth-to-weight ratio. These clusters are made up of tiny feather strands that trap heat, which is why it's so important to get a quality jacket with a construction that allows its insulation to loft effectively!
The down is treated with a Grangers fluorocarbon-free Hydrophobic finish called Grangers Down Defend®. This hydrophobic down treatment is bluesign® approved and helps keep down lofted in damp conditions. It gives the down over 375x more durability than untreated down, extending the lifespan of your jacket. In Rab's testing (shake test), this virgin down can resist moisture for at least 15000 minutes and also improves the down's fill power by up to 5%. Allowing the jacket to keep you warmer for longer. Neat right?
Can't quite catch the lingo? Here's a quick breakdown.
Fill power - Fill power measures the warmth and efficiency of the down, alongside its ability to loft/fluff up. A rating of 800 fill power means that 1oz of this down fills 800 cubic inches of space when fully lofted.
R.D.S - The Responsible Down Standard ensures that the down is sourced from happy birds who haven't been plucked and have been well cared for.
Hydrophobic - Hydrophobic Down dries out and lofts quicker, resisting moisture from sweat that may build up as you warm up inside the jacket. Fluorocarbon-free Hydrophobic finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment - an excellent feature for more eco-conscious adventurers.
Fabrics: The Positron Pro Jacket is constructed using 30D Pertex® Quantum Pro for the jacket's outer and 20D Pertex® Quantum lining. These Pertex® fabrics are created from recycled materials and use tightly woven fibres for excellent wind resistance and durability, whilst still being lightweight and soft. They are designed to perfectly balance wind resistance and breathability, providing the ultimate performance for intense, fast-paced mountain missions.
The Pertex® Quantum Pro outer has a microporous coating to provide excellent water resistance, making it more suitable for use in cold or damp environments, where keeping warm and dry is crucial. The Pertex® Quantum lining traps still air, helping to warm the insulation and maintain its efficiency whilst creating a light, protective barrier from the elements.
The outer fabric is finished with a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) that encourages rain and snow to bead off the material instead of soaking in; however, please note this does not make the jacket waterproof. For prolonged wet weather, we always recommend packing a waterproof hardshell jacket for when the weather turns nasty.
What are its features?
The Positron Pro uses a full boxwall chamber structure on the torso, hood and upper arms, giving the down insulation more space to fluff up than classic stitch-through baffles, as they have a little more height to them and less bulk around the seams. The more the insulation lofts, the more heat it can trap inside to keep you reliably warm. In contrast, the underarms and side panels use a zoned baffle construction to help increase mobility where you need it most, whilst reducing overall weight, bulk and pack size.
A helmet-compatible down-filled hood provides shelter over your head or helmet when the weather turns nasty. Concealed adjusters on the hood are easy to use when wearing gloves allow you to cinch it in close for maximum thermal retention on exposed belays, whilst the stiffened peak on the top of the hood helps keep falling snow and rain away from the face.
The jacket features a two-way YKK® VISLON® front zip with an insulated baffle on the inside to help reduce heat loss through the zip. Its two-way design provides flexibility for use with a climbing harness and freedom of movement through the hips when required.
Articulated sleeves provide a more natural range of movement, so you don't feel restricted when reaching up and stretching out. It also helps minimise the jacket hem rise when climbing and provide a little extra room around the shoulders for layering.
For storage, you'll find two insulated zipped chest pockets, two zipped hand pockets, an internal mesh stuff pocket and an internal zipped security pocket. They offer plenty of space for keeping your essentials close to hand, such as a mobile phone, GPS device, gloves, beanie, energy gels and snacks, helping you stay prepared and fueled for your adventure. Hook and loop adjustable cuff tabs and an adjustable bottom hem allow you to maximise thermal retention by trapping warm air inside the jacket and keeping cold winds out.
Finally, the Positron Pro Jacket features Rab's regular fit, which offers a little room underneath for different layers, allowing you to create your very own effective layering system tailored to the weather conditions.
