What is the Firewall Guide Jacket?
The Firewall Guide Jacket is a fully featured waterproof shell designed for maximum protection in demanding environments. Created for mountaineers and alpinists in mind, and those who spend long days out in harsh, changeable conditions. It delivers reliable waterproof protection and a compact pack size, without compromising on functionality.
Materials & Technology
Pertex® Shield 3-Layer Fabric
Firewall Guide Jacket is built from 40D three-layer PERTEX® Shield, which is a soft, highly breathable, waterproof fabric designed for low bulk protection in the mountains when weight and breathability are key.
The jacket's three-layer construction combines a waterproof, windproof and breathable membrane, robust 40D polyamide face fabric and a soft backer. The 40-denier recycled nylon ripstop outer offers good levels of abrasion resistance for regular use with backpacks while remaining lightweight. The thin waterproof and windproof membrane provides reliable protection from the elements. A soft backer protects the waterproof membrane from abrasion and improves next-to-skin comfort and durability when worn over base layers.
Although the material is only 40D, it feels reassuringly sturdy yet still comfortable to wear and highly packable to stuff in your rucksack, ready for when the heavens open without taking up heaps of space.
Waterproof Performance
Pertex® Shield delivers a hydrostatic head rating of 20,000mm for dependable waterproof protection in prolonged wet conditions. A breathability MVTR score of 20,000 g/m2/24hrs allows excess heat and moisture to escape throughout the day to keep you feeling comfortable on challenging sections of trail.
Fluorocarbon-Free DWR Finish
The outer fabric is finished with a fluorocarbon-free DWR (durable water repellent) coating to encourage rain to bead off the jacket's surface rather than soak into the face fabric (also known as wetting out). This further enhances the jacket’s waterproof properties and helps protect the waterproof membrane, without the use of harmful forever chemicals.
Features and Functionality
Adjustable Helmet Compatible Hood
The jacket features a 3-point adjustable hood with a flexible, stiffened peak for essential protection from the elements, which helps keep rain and snow away from the face. It can be adjusted with one hand, making it easier to refine the fit quickly when conditions change. The hood is generously sized to accommodate a climbing helmet, ensuring maximum shelter, whatever the adventure.
RECCO® Reflector
An integrated RECCO® reflector is built into the jacket for an extra layer of search-and-rescue safety in mountain environments, just in case. It helps professional rescue teams locate you more easily in an emergency.
4 External Pockets
For Storage, you'll find four external pockets, two chest pockets and two hand pockets, all protected with waterproof YKK® AquaGuard® zips. They provide ample space for various trail essentials such as gloves, snacks, a mobile phone and small guide books. The combination of chest and hand pockets gives you added versatility for various activities and use with a climbing harness.
Internal Storage
There is also an additional internal mesh stuff pocket and an internal zipped security pocket, useful for quick-drop storage of bulkier items or for maximum protection of more valuable items in torrential conditions.
2-Way Front Zip
The jacket is fastened with a two-way YKK® AquaGuard® VISLON® front zip, making it compatible with a climbing harness. The zip can be undone to provide flexible ventilation and mobility through the hips for steep ascents.
The zip features a soft internal chin guard for comfort around the face when fully zipped and an internal storm placket to prevent water ingress through the zip in windy and torrential conditions.
2-Way Fully Venting Pit Zips
Two YKK® AquaGuard® pit zips offer excellent ventilation, allowing you to quickly dump excess heat during steep ascents or high-output movement without removing the jacket. The zips feature haptic pullers to make them easier to use in poor weather or when wearing gloves.
Sleeve Articulation
Fully articulated sleeves provide a natural range of movement for various outdoor activities, and are particularly useful when reaching overhead, using poles or moving over technical ground.
Extended Cuffs
Extended, shaped cuffs with hook and loop adjustment provide additional coverage across the wrists when reaching up or stretching. They help create a better seal against wind and rain and give you more flexibility when layering over various gloves in cold, wet conditions.
Rear Hem Adjustment
Finally, a dual-sided rear hem adjustment, which can be adjusted with one hand, allows you to seal out the elements further, trapping vital warm air inside the jacket and cold drafts out.
