Tierra Womens Back Up Jacket Relaxed Fit Black

Season:Sale AW23

Brand:Tierra

Code:T2024610-99

What is the Back Up Jacket (Relaxed)?

It's a lightweight, waterproof Gore-Tex® jacket with a relaxed fit, perfect for fast and light mountain activity and manoeuvres that require plenty of freedom of movement, such as fastpacking, hiking and scrambling across steep, technical terrain.

What is it made of?

The Back Up Jacket comprises Gore-Tex® Paclite made of 100% polyester with an ePTFE membrane. Gore-Tex® Paclite is lightweight and offers optimum packability and breathability. You can easily tuck it into a backpack or kit bag without wasting too much space inside or adding excessive grams to your load. The ePTFE membrane adds extra durability, thermal resistance and has a high strength-to-weight ratio.

Overall, the material is exceptionally robust and can easily withstand bumps and scrapes from regular mountain use.

The material is coated with PFCec-free DWR (durable water repellent) for extra reinforcement against wet weather. The PFCec-free DWR also earns this jacket some environmental credentials, as it doesn't use any toxic chemicals that can harm the planet.

What are its features?

This is the relaxed version of the Back Up Jacket, so it has a roomier fit than the standard version, providing more space underneath for thicker layers or simply to suit those who prefer a less tailored shape.

The front of the Back Up is fastened with a full-length, two-way zip and an external snap-button placket which is super convenient for intense activities... Why? Because it allows you to ventilate the jacket without entirely undoing the front. Simply unzip halfway from the bottom and leave the top fastened. This will provide extra airflow around the jacket while keeping you sheltered from the elements on top. Alternatively, you could keep the whole zip undone and just keep the buttons done up.

If you'd rather not use the front entry, there are designated ventilation zips at each side to improve temperature regulation. You could even use all three if you're really working up a sweat!

The hood is fully adjustable and has a unique brim construction, with a peak at the top designed to shield your face from the rain. It's combined with a mesh storage bag that doubles up as a mozzie net to keep mosquitos and no-see-ums at bay in humid climates or, of course, in the beautiful Scottish Highlands.

Two large hand pockets are perfect for storing essentials like a GPS device, compass or energy gels to keep you fuelled throughout your adventure.

Velcro adjustments on the cuffs allow you to adapt the fit around your layering system and chunky gloves or mitts, while the cord adjustment at the hem makes it easy to cinch the bottom of the jacket to keep the heat in and the weather out.

Features:

  • Full-length two-way front zip
  • PFC-Free zippers
  • External placket with 3 safety snap buttons
  • Two large hand pockets
  • Side ventilation
  • Fully adjustable hood with unique brim construction, combined with mesh storage bag it keeps the mosquitos out
  • Velcro adjustments at sleeve end
  • Cord adjustment at hem
  • Relaxed fit gives more room for layering underneath

For best performance:

With any new waterproof, we advise you to wash the product with the appropriate tech wash and reapply a fresh DWR to activate the technology and achieve the best performance from day one.

How does waterproof technology work?

Modern waterproof technology often uses a waterproof membrane sandwiched between layers of fabric and a DWR (Durable Water Repellent) on the outer material.

What is 'wetting out', and how does it affect my waterproof?

DWRs commonly get worn down from contact, whether with your backpack or your fingertips. When the DWR wears down, your waterproof product may begin to 'wet out', meaning the water stops beading off the surface and starts to soak in instead.

While the waterproof membrane will prevent the jacket from leaking or water from getting inside, when your jacket wets out, moisture (from sweat or condensation) can build up on the interior, causing it to feel moist.

There's a common misconception that, when this happens, the product is faulty because people believe the waterproof membrane is leaking. However, this is most likely not the case; you simply need to clean your jacket and reapply the DWR.

The easiest way to spot when this is happening is to see if water beads off the material's surface or soaks in.

PFC/PFAS usage in modern waterproof and DWR technology

Most modern DWR technology avoids the use of PFCs/PFAS chemicals.

PFC-free means perfluorinated chemical-free. Companies such as Gore-Tex® are also beginning to eliminate these harmful chemicals in their waterproof membranes with technology like Gore-Tex® ePE.

What are PFC/PFAS chemicals?

Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) are also known as forever chemicals and cause environmental harm, similar to PFAS.

PFAS means per- or poly-fluorinated alkyl; these are a group of industrial chemicals that also cause detrimental harm to the environment, often through product and garment manufacture.

These chemicals can't break down, so once they reach nature (usually via factory water waste), they stay in the ecosystem and contaminate living organisms, working their way up the food chain. PFAS and PFCs are suspected carcinogens and have been known to affect mammal reproduction and hormone production. Therefore, many leading brands in the outdoor industry are now prioritising cutting out the use of these chemicals entirely to contribute to a more responsible manufacturing process.

How to care for a new waterproof product

PFC/PFAS-free waterproof products still perform effectively. However, they will require more frequent care (washing and reapplying a DWR) to ensure consistency. We stock various care products for this, which you can browse here. If this is your first time doing this, check out our easy how-to guide by clicking here.
