What is the Ether Extreme Insulated Sleeping Mat?

You may already be familiar with Sea to Summits 3-Season Ether Lite Sleeping mat. Well, this is the warmer version! Sea to Summit has increased the insulation to make the matt warmer for cold-weather adventures.

This innovative mat is perfect for backpacking, travelling, and mountaineering in sub-zero conditions thanks to the super warm Exkin Platinum, dual-density layers of Thermolite insulation, exceptionally comfortable Air Sprung Cell construction and the ability to deflate and inflate the mat quickly. The Ether provides a luxurious10cm of thick cushioning whilst still maintaining a tiny pack size.

What is the Ether made of?

Insulation: Inside the mat, you'll find super warm dual-density Thermolite and Exkin Platinum insulation to provide enough warmth for winter seasons. Exkin Platinum reflects your natural body heat back to you, while Thermolite insulation prevents convective heat loss over time. If that wasn't enough, the Ether Extreme includes an anti-microbial treatment to avoid future issues when warm, moist air inevitably becomes trapped inside. This insulation is not only warm but incredibly packable, meaning the sleeping mat will roll down to a fraction of its blown-up size.

Outer Fabric: The mat is made using a combination of lightweight, quiet and grippy 40D and 30D Nylon fabric. The combination of these two weights of fabric gives you a mat that will pack down to almost nothing, almost weighing less than a 500ml bottle of coke, but also gives you extra protection and reassurance when the ground underneath you is a bit harsher than you'd like.

What are the features?

Providing further comfort is Sea to Summit's eXtra Thick (XT) Loop Baffle Air Sprung Cell technology. Bigger air pockets are created using many looped TPU baffles, which connect the top and bottom fabric layers with their Air Sprung Cell dot weld pattern. The looped baffles allow the top and bottom layers to be positioned further apart, creating larger pockets of air that require less fabric overall when inflated.

In addition to the extra height of this mat that lets hips sink deeper into it without touching the ground, this design is perfect for those who sleep on their sides. Other features include a repair kit, an anti-microbial treatment to prevent mould growth and a pillow lock for attaching an Aeros pillow.

What is the R-value?

This matt has a whopping R-Value of 6.2, which in real terms means that this matt will protect you in extreme, expedition-level sub-zero conditions.

R-Values are an international standard of insulation and (in simple terms) indicate the material's ability to reduce heat flow through conduction, radiation or convection. Therefore the higher the R-Value, the lower the heat transfer and the greater the insulation properties of the material.
