Rigorously tested on unsupported arctic expeditions, the Polar Expedition Jacket from Mountain Equipment is second to none when it comes to protection and performance in the worlds coldest and most difficult conditions. The jacket (and salopettes set) were originally designed in partnership with Ben Saunders for his 105 day, 1795 mile Scott expedition to the South Pole and back, and have been in the range ever since. The Polar jacket is constructed using 30D Drilite with an Electrospun backer. Drilite is highly weather resistant whilst the Electrospun backer offers both exceptional breathability and total wind-blocking, so both come together to give you a jacket that offers you exceptional performance in Polar Regions.
The jacket is loaded with very clever features - The Super Alpine Hood is both helmet compatible and highly adjustable, to keep the weather out when you're not wearing a helmet. The storage space consists of 4 large external pockets with YKK zips and a large internal mesh pocket. Excess heat can either be dumped out of the 2-way YKK moulded front zip (which is backed by a storm flap for extra protection) or the 2-way YKK moulded underarm pit zips. Lastly, the jacket also features adjustable, laminated cuffs and a dual tether hem drawcord (non-elastic drawcord throughout the jacket for long-term performance in extreme cold). It's good to note that all of the toggles (in the hood, in the hem drawcord and on the zips) are large and easy to negotiate with big gloves on.
The Polar jacket comes under Mountain Equipments 'Alpine Fit' block, which is designed to be close fitting yet still roomy enough to fit all out your layers underneath it. The body in this jacket is cut longer than their standard length to offer more protection from the elements and the sleeves are articulated and pre-shaped.
