What is the Solar Eco 0?
The lightest in Rab's Solar Eco range, The Solar Eco 0 is a much more sustainable option than other sleeping bags on the market. Made with 100% recycled materials, this sleeping bag is constructed to offer high quality, technical performance to keep you comfortable in warm temperatures. Perfect on those cooler summer evenings so you can make the most of your seasonal adventures.
What is it made of?
Insulation:The Solar Eco sleeping bag is made using synthetic (artificial) insulation, known as Stratus™ Eco, instead of natural goose or duck down. Stratus™ Eco has been developed by Rab, using recycled fibres to create a high performance insulative material.
Rab has used two different weights of Stratus™ Eco sheet insulation to construct this bag. The upper is filled with 60gsm, while the underneath uses 40gsm sheet insulation.
Why?... Well, when insulation is compressed, it can't trap as much heat. Therefore, the underside doesn't need as much insulation because it will be compressed anyway. So, the clever designers at Rab thought, why add unnecessary weight to the sleeping bag with extra insulation in this area if the user isn't going to benefit from it. The use of less insulation here results in a lighter bag that takes up less space in your pack. Meanwhile, the 60gsm on top will still keep you comfortable and warm as you rest.
A big bonus to synthetic insulation is that it can still provide insulation when wet, unlike untreated down sleeping bags. Ideally, it makes a better option in damper climates where you'll likely run into a rain shower or two.
Stratus™ Eco uses 100% recycled fibres made from post-consumer PET bottles. Recycling single-use plastics helps reduce waste and energy consumption and keeps valuable resources in action and out of landfill sites that pollute our beautiful planet! A fantastic option for the more eco-conscious or Vegan adventurer.
Outer fabric:The outer fabric of this sleeping bag uses a 20D Atmos™ Recycled Polyester Ripstop (41gsm), a durable outer shell able to resist abrasion and tough enough to withstand rocky terrain. This material is treated with a fluorocarbon-free durable water repellent (DWR) for extra weather resistance in slightly harsher conditions and protects from accidental drinks spills. Fluorocarbon-free finishes don't use harmful chemicals that cause damage to the environment, another bonus feature for those seeking a more sustainable sleeping bag.
Lining:A lighter weight version of 20D Atmos™ Recycled Polyester Ripstop (38gsm) provides a flexible lining that is comfy on the skin.
What are its features?
Our heads are one of the most significant contributors to body temperature regulation, so if they get cold, we get cold! Even in warmer climates, temperatures can drop rapidly once the sun goes down. So, the adjustable hood closure system lets users keep the top of the head nice and toasty. At the same time, the elasticated drawcord and cordlock adjuster enables you to find a close fit to minimise exposure to cold air.
A close fitting adjustable neck baffle helps to further prevent precious heat from escaping whilst providing extra insulation for the neck/shoulder area. The sleeping bag is fastened with a YKK® 3/4 length main zip on the left, with an insulated baffle running alongside to prevent a big cold spot at the entry. Anti-snag zip inserts and an anti-snag internal zip guard helps to prevent the fabric from getting caught in the zip, which we all know is 1. Annoying, and 2. It could lead to accidental tearing.
The sleeping bag is constructed in a single layer blanket and uses localised quilting in critical areas to maximise warmth by reducing cold transmission. This refers to the different insulation weights in the upper and base of the bag.
A compression stuffsack is included to carry and store the sleeping bag. Remember, a stuffsack is meant to be stuffed! So do your best to cram your sleeping bag inside instead of folding or rolling the bag away. Stuffing helps prevent repeat folding and creases in the same areas of the insulation, preventing cold spots from developing when stored.
