What is the Bug Barrier™ Expedition LS?
The Bug Barrier™ Expedition is a long sleeve (LS) shirt with a casual design and all the functionality of a technical summer layer. It helps to keep out bitey insects while feeling lightweight and well ventilated, thanks to the built-in Insect Shield® technology and polyester stretch. The shirt is quick drying, moisture wicking and able to regulate body temperature in hot climates. What more could you ask for?
What is it made of?
The shirt is constructed with Expedition Ripstop, which is a lightweight yet still comfortable and durable polyester, great for resisting wear and abrasion from long days in rocky terrain or multi-day camping trips under the sun. The material has a slight stretch to improve freedom of movement while being able to dry quickly, wicking away moisture from the skin which helps prevent the shirt from feeling damp and sticky after working up a sweat in the mountains.
There's no need to worry about the shirt looking crumpled when worn on longer excursions, thanks to the wrinkle resistant properties of the fabric. It helps to prevent the material from creasing up so you can focus on getting down and dirty, making the most of technical summer adventures.
What are its features?
Bug Barrier™ technology offers exceptional protection from annoying creepy crawlies like midges and mosquitos. It uses Insect Shield®, an EPA registered treatment applied to the fabric, proven to provide long lasting, effective protection against insects - perfect for spending a weekend away in the Scottish Highlands or exploring more tropical climates abroad on longer expeditions.
It also has a mesh yoke with HeiQ Smart Temp activated technology, which helps regulate the body temperature when working up a sweat in the mountains in hot, humid conditions. Buttons run up the front centre to fasten, which look smart, traditional and are super easy to use.
If you want a little extra ventilation or are just looking to brown those arms a little, the sleeves roll up and can be secured using the tab fastening so that they don't start falling down mid-route.
There are two flap pockets on each side of the chest, handy for keeping snacks or a compass accessible. Hidden zip pockets also sit on the chest and at the side of the shirt, perfect for stowing away more valuable items that you don't want to drop, such as a phone, GPS or car keys.
How does it fit?
Royal Robbins has put this shirt in their standard fit category, meaning it sits slightly looser on the body for improved airflow, with the option to wear unbuttoned like an overshirt with another layer underneath.
